Brasserie Savarin — Restaurant in Ghent

This was not my first trip to Ghent but one of many. This time, I brought my Malaysian relatives, who were visiting Ghent for the first time. When searching for Ghent’s local food, I found Savarin restaurant, which serves waterzooi and stofvlees. I decided to try them, and to my surprise, Savarin offered scrumptious local cuisine with warm service. We had chicken waterzooi, Gentse stoverij, Filet pur van het paard and Vol au vent. The dishes came with homemade bread, very fluffy and fresh, and fries. The waterzooi is creamy and yummy. The horse steak is perfect with the sauce. The beef stew has this unique herb taste that just make you feel like floating with amazement and the Bol au vent is creamy and nice. My friend and I ordered Horse steak & Vol-Au-Vent - both came with a salad, a side of Belgian fries and we substituted fries for potato croquettes; paired with a tasty French Syrah. The whole meal was rounded off by splitting a Moelleux with mint and strawberry. I cannot remember having a better traditional Belgian meal. The service was of quality, with a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. Our plates were completely clean after the meal; the sauce used for Vol-Au-Vent was impeccable, the horse steak cooked to perfection. As a tour guide who works in Gent, I could not recommend this place more for anyone looking for a well-made, honest Belgian meal at a remarkable price. Looking forward to coming back. Bravo...

The food itself was decent, though overpriced for what it was. Unfortunately, the service completely ruined the experience. Despite the restaurant being nearly empty, the staff seemed disorganized. They never asked us how we wanted our potatoes prepared (even though the menu clearly offered options), our dish was mistakenly delivered to another table before finally reaching us, and to top it off, we were charged an extra €2 simply because we shared one plate without any prior notice or confirmation.
