The hubby and I wanted to try making a seafood gumbo and found the recipe called for file powder. Hubby searched where we could find it locally and ended up finding it at The Silk Road Spice Merchant on Whyte Ave. I've lived in Edmonton all my life and I had no clue about this store! I was pleasantly surprised by the smells of spices that hit me when I walked in the store. The staff are friendly and helpful, the store was clean, and the shelves were labeled by categories, and displayed beautifully (not cluttered). The spices have labels with descriptions on what they are used for. If I had more time I would've read everything! Prices are very reasonable. Hubby was super pleased when opening up the file powder as it was packed to the brim of the jar. We'll be making gumbo for a while with this one jar. I would recommend this store if you are looking for spices you just can't get at the grocery store and for your everyday grocery store spices. They also have unique mixes for meats and fish that I will be trying next time!

The Silk Road Spice Merchant – Edmonton Just walking in, the aromas overtake you—in a very good way. This is the kind of place you visit when you’re chasing that specialty ingredient, that next-level touch where the spice itself is integral to the meal. I don’t have this level of kitchen experience (yet), but I’m open to it—and I’ll be back when the right recipe calls for it. The staff looked busy but sharp and attentive. If I’d had a question, no doubt they’d have had the answer. Instead, we just wandered, absorbed everything with our eyes—and definitely with our noses. This is a one of a kind next-level store.

If you enjoy the art of cooking with fine spices. Then this is the place for you. Many great spices available here and all reasonable priced. Reusable bottles you can get refilled and lots of friendly staff available to help with questions and fill your purchase. Lots of great gift ideas for the cooks in your life. Come and enjoy the great experience of shopping for great spices. You can also get some great bitters for the cocktail lovers in your life.

Recently placed an order on line through Silk Road Spice Merchant since Covid 19 has closed them down. I know they are overwhelmed with orders coming in and trying to fill them while practicing social distancing. I placed an order over a week ago with all the patience in the world as to when I will get it (I was not in a rush to receive it).

My order has been delivered (to a friends home as I am located rural) in a very quick time that I was not expecting.

I have purchased several items from this place over the years and I keep coming back for more and as I run out of different spices at home, I get refills from here instead of the grocery store. Yes, the prices are more than what you would pay in a grocery store. However, the quality is so much greater that you really can't compare. My most favorite spice I buy here is cinnamon! Although they have a few varieties, I think my favorite is the Vietnamese cinnamon! It is so strong it makes my mouth water because I love love love cinnamon! It has such a wonderful strong cinnamon scent that I just have to make cinnamon buns with my new bottle arriving!

Next time you need any type of a spice, give these guys a try! I highly doubt you will regret it. If you don't like their cinnamon, I'll...

This little place is an absolute gem. First off, when you walk in, the aroma of sweet and savoury spices welcomes you in with a warm and cozy hug. Then you're greeted by kind, knowledgable staff, who walk you through the history/region of the spices, recipe ideas, and even custom gift-box options.

Aside from the lovely shopping experience, you can't beat the quality, quantity, and pricing of Silk Road's products. Over the past few years my spice cabinet has slowly been replaced with a variety of Silk Road spices and I've never looked back — the dishes that I've made from their products have never been tastier. A few of my personal faves are: Vietnamese Saigon Cassia Cinnamon, Pumpkin Pie Spice, Cajun Blackening Spice (to die for), Jalapeño Chiles, Vanilla Sugar, and...
