The Pho, and... the Service, and... and..... That about all I can say is good after coming here 3 times. If you plan to get Pho specifically, I will say this is one of my top so far here in Edmonton. Not my #1, but one of the best. Otherwise, anything else is a tragedy.
My experience: I came here a few times with my friends, and the first time we only ordered Pho and Salad rolls. First of all, the staff was quite nice, and there's young man (pretty sure the son of the owner), who will recognize you and give great customer service. The Salad Rolls tasted fine honestly, although they didn't have much crunch to it, and the peanut sauce was especially good. The Pho came out, and me and my friends were pleased. Although I will say, compared to the Pho in Portland, this wouldn't hold up amazingly. The Noodles and Broth were cooked to perfection, and all ingredients came together well. Texture of proper Pho, and looks of proper Pho, only thing to say about this is the taste of the broth definitely could've been better. Besides that, the Pho is a 4/5. Now, after this first time going in, I came back a second time. Had a bowl of Pho, and it was quite pleasant. Then, I came back a third time. As a lover of Pad Thai specifically, I wanted to try some other things on the menu during this trip. I ordered their house Pad Thai, and their Calamari. I was first greeted with the Calamari, here's where the tragedy begins.
I was first extremely surprised to see the sauce on the side be a Hot BBQ sauce. As somebody who has had lots of calamari in their life, the side sauce is normally Sweet Chili Sauce. Seeing Hot BBQ sauce as their normal side sauce, was already a big nono for me. Then, after receiving the right sauce, I tried the Calamari. The breaded crust was falling off as I picked it up, and as I dipped it in the sauce, I then realized that the breaded crust itself was undercooked. It was almost like if they threw a layer of breadcrumbs the width of the squid itself onto the outside of the Calamari. Each time I would touch the Calamari with my fingers, the breadcrumbs would fall off the squid like a powdered snow. Hoping for more, I tried the Calamari, only to eat a raw squid dipped in Sweet Chili sauce, since all of the breadcrumbs have already fell off. This was a disappointment. Still with hope, I was eager to try the Pad Thai. Then it came out. The display was absolutely horrendous. First of all, they made it with the rice noodles used in Pho! Second of all, the Dish was completely red. The 'noodles' themselves, only had a red tint to them. And it seemed like it was mostly noodle. A complete contrast to the golden brown Pad Thai I am used to seeing. There were a few other ingredients splashed in there for display, but still didn't fix what it was trying to hide. The taste? Bad but, honestly could've been worse. If you are into Pad Thai, then the taste of this will really put you down. I'm at least glad the Pad Thai wasn't anywhere near as terrible as...
Read moreAte here with my friend in the afternoon. Walked in through the back. Looked like we had walked into the kitchen and made our way through to the front seating area. We both found that charming, kind of a mom and pop shop.
It was cute and cozy looking seating area. However temperature was cool. My friend kept her jacket on. But it was also -37, so this is not part of the rating.
Service was very friendly.
Menu was extensive because not only did they serve Vietnamese food. They also served breakfast/brunch western style. So you could have pho and pancakes.
I ordered the pho satay and spring rolls. Both very flavourful and delicious. It was nice they had spinach in the soup but I had thought it was basil. So it was a nutritional plus. Pho satay was nice and peanut ish and mild spice. Lots of meat. I also ordered a side of meatballs.
The spring rolls came out right away, very crispy and tasty meat insides. The fish sauce dip was yummy too.
I finished off with a slice of peanut butter pie. Very yummy.
My friend had the vermicelli. She said it was delicious.
My friend said she would come back to eat here again. So would I. And we are big Vietnamese...
Read moreUniversity student, been a student at uofa since 2020, it's now 2024. I will take the time to bus from campus to come here during a food break that fits my schedule. It's just far enough away from campus where it's off campus so you meet a variety of people, and just close enough where it doesn't take too much time to travel too.
I exclusively eat the phos from here, not because the other food is bad but because it's healthy, tasty, and cheap. The pho broth is not weak which is important. I can also slurp up the bowl in under 10 minutes and be full. Usually here 3 or 4 times a week. Good for studying. I've also tried the breakfast foods here before and it is good, especially the eggs benedict, even though I don't crave western food often.
All the staff are very personable and have gotten to know them throughout the years, they will do the same for you. They're also open early, weekdays at 8 and 9 am on weekends you just need to go to the Friends & Neighbours side but they will serve pho to you. Therefore I can get my brunch fix if I'm too busy for lunch. Close at 9 pm usually so I can get my last meal of the day here too,...
