Some items, their prices are comparatively cheaper than other supermarkets like Foody World and TnT. Foody World always sells their 白菜 Bak Choi for $1.99/lb. And I have not seen TnT sell Bak Choi for $1.69/lb for months already, so upon seeing 88 Supermarket selling it for $1.69/lb, we hurriedly snatched a few bags more than usual. 😅
They were selling 5 fresh corns for $3. They looked like the same breed as those sold at Foody World. They appeared over-ripe, but they were actually just right for eating. $3 for 5 is not the cheapest I've seen. Last year, Superstore was selling fresh, unpeeled corns for 49 cents each, but that was very rare. It only happens once in a blue moon. So, $3 for 5 is still considered a bargain! I will go back again tomorrow for more!
Bulk raw chicken drumsticks in a bag costs just $1.88/lb whereas packaged drumsticks like you see at Costco or TnT sells for $2.88/lb. Their drumsticks are the same size as everywhere else. Costco's packaged drumsticks costs $3.50/lb, almost doubling 88 Supermarket's bulk price. Each bag has 25 chicken drumsticks in it and costs around $10 each bag. It's a great deal!
The $24.95 豉油走地雞 Free Ranch Soy Sauce Chicken appears inexpensive, but it's comparatively smaller than those I buy at Richmond's Parker Place that cost $33 each. I honestly don't mind it being smaller, though. We can never finish the whole chicken in one meal anyway, and we never liked leftovers either.
The $7.95 Vietnamese Subs each measured 9 inches long, were made to order, and were loaded with ingredients, an amount that I don't see often elsewhere. They tasted pretty good too, but sadly the French baguette was not crispy enough despite staffs putting it into the oven for a few minutes before adding the ingredients. Nonetheless, it's worth the price.
PS. Only the "特色越式法包 Special Sub" has a spread of liver Pâté. All others don't.
PSS. All Subs have hot fresh chili. Personally, I think it's very mild but my wife thinks otherwise. She was screaming bloody hell as she cannot handle the slightest chili. 🤣😂😁...
Read moreLove this newly-opened oriental groceries store in Richmond. The staffs are so friendly and very helpful in searching for a few items on my list. They carry almost every ingredients from Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, China, and the Philippines. They also offer a loyalty program for regular customers. I would not shop anywhere else where the prices are much higher and the customer services are not their priority. T&T offers a lotalty program but I have so far (after more than 10 years shoping there) not received anything at all from it. Customers also need to purchase more than a certain amount to earn the points at T&T. 88 Supermarket offers me a recyclable cardboard box for my groceries without having to pay for extra bags. Almost all staffs at 88 Supermarket can speak English. Oriental Grocery stores are getting very competitive in Richmond and Vancouver these days. The customer service is never ever their priority but profiting the most from the growing Asian population is their only goal. Time has changed and moving along to serve better in pricing, customer needs, and rewards program are becoming an essential. Rooms to improve are the produce department, store appearance (neat, tidy, and clean). Other than that, i would do my grocery shopping here ever week with...
Read moreWe love coming here in the morning when it's not so busy. The perfect store for getting your Thai and Vietnamese food items and you can also get basic sushi and banh mi sandwiches as well. There is an Asian takeout section which is good. The only letdown is their roast Pork for takeout. You could be unlucky and get a piece with a big bone and hardly any meat and they'll charge you for that bone! Even the container was included as part of the weight which I brought up to the manager. I weighed it at home and yes they did include the container weight. The manager said he would make sure to check their scale system so that it doesn't do this, but unsure if they practice this. Now the roast pork was just so so. Maybe a bit below average considering the great options they have in Richmond. So I will get my pork at other places where they don't argue about the bone and the flavours are better. Besides that, everything else is terrific. Great value, fresh produce that can be hard to find elsewhere and a good variety for Filipino, Vietnamese and Thai foods. So south east...
