Sky Costanera was an impressive complex, not only the tallest building in Latin America but also home to Santiago’s largest mall. On our first visit we headed straight for the observation deck after arriving by Uber. We found the ticket booth one floor below street level after asking a security guard. I paid about forty US dollars for two tickets, which felt reasonable compared to prices in the US or the UK.
The line for the elevator was longer than the ride itself. The lift moved so quickly that we reached the lower observation floor in under a minute. To reach the upper platform we simply took the escalator after taking pictures around the lower level. We arrived on a Monday around sunset and found it very crowded, but I suspect weekends would be even busier. The sun was already dipping when we got there, and in hindsight, arriving thirty minutes earlier would have given us more daylight for our photos. Staying through sunset, however, allowed us to capture a wide range of lighting effects, and once darkness fell, the crowds dispersed almost immediately.
A few days later, we returned by Uber again to explore the mall portion. Spread over five well-laid out levels, we managed to see most of the stores in about three hours, with breaks for lunch and coffee. We ate at Kali and Dipsy, an American style hamburger joint that exceeded our expectations. My fiancée loved her burger so much that she wanted to go back on another day to eat there again. About an hour after lunch, we stopped at Juan Valdez for a strong coffee and shared a rather dry brownie, which the coffee easily made up for. After we finally finished shopping, we headed down to the underground level to catch a taxi back to our hotel.
We used Uber for both trips but found departures chaotic with the crush of traffic surrounding the complex. On both visits we opted to take a taxi from the parking garage beneath the complex. Just follow the signage on the first level to the garage entrance, take a number, and wait for a taxi to arrive.
Overall, we were delighted with both visits to Sky Costanera and would recommend it to anyone...
Read moreThe "experience" is very overpriced and corny, much like the building itself.
They say there is "free wine" like they mean an open bar, but you actually have to stand in a VERY long and slow line and fill up a form at the end of it (hence the slowness) for what seemed like only a quarter of a cup of wine. Not exactly my idea of fun.
The live music was honestly a low point, the guy started with a selection of the corniest songs ever like Hotel California, We Are The Champions and Piña Colada Song, then proceeded to try singing Bohemian Rhapsody, of all songs, for which he just didn't have the necessary pipes, making it painful to listen to. He was a good guitar player though, and managed to sync the ending of a solo with the exact moment the sun disappeared. That was about the only good moment, music-wise.
The place gets very crowded and it's hard to get a good view of the sunset once everyone is trying to pose for photos in front of you. Also, the glass is quite dirty and reflexive, which doesn't help with the photos.
The view of Santiago is indeed very nice and like no other. The point of view from the cerros - which are free to visit and a much nicer experience in general - are also very beautiful, but this one is so much higher. The last rays of sunshine hitting the mountain range were especially beautiful. So, if you want to check it out, that's the price to pay, I guess. Just don't expect a lot of wine - or vibes - from the...
