Exploring Hongya Dong (洪崖洞), Chongqing’s Most Photographed Spot!
If there’s one place in Chongqing that screams iconic, it’s Hongya Dong (洪崖洞). When the lights come on, the cascading layers of traditional-style buildings create a mesmerizing cyberpunk-meets-ancient-China scene. It’s an absolute must-see and a photo-worthy experience—if you can manage to get a shot!
The reality? You’re not the only one with the same idea. The crowds here are insane. You’ll be battling hordes of tourists, all vying for that perfect angle. The best solution? Hire one of the many local photographers hanging around the area. They offer quick photo services, and prices are quite competitive—just ask around before committing. The final result may not be award-winning, but it’s definitely better than a rushed selfie on your phone.
Despite the madness, Hongya Dong is an unmissable stop. Just don’t take a taxi—it’s easier to walk from Jiefangbei. A pro tip: enter at Level 11 (yes, that’s ground level in this gravity-defying city!) and take the lift down to Level 1, where the best photo spots are.
It’s painful, crowded, and chaotic—but absolutely worth it. Would I do it again? Maybe… after a deep breath and a lot of patience! 😅

As well as, ground floor is most entertaining part, here you can play games (if win get present if lose pay), get artist to draw your picture, buy postcards, watch live performance and so on. On 3rd floor you will find snacks, exclusively Chongqing style spicy and numbing. The best way to get here is by taxi, or take Metro line and walk down 5 minutes towards Hongyadong. Be careful of your pockets in crowded places just in case. At night it can be an issue to find a taxi, since alk toursits order taxi and there is always...

Ppl will stop in their tracks to take photos even if it's in extreme congestion environment. Every single vendor has a megaphone and their only sales strategy is to outshout everyone else, so extremely, extremely noisy and chaotic environment and endless shouting over megaphones. There's also endless ppl shoving iPads in your faces to costume services. The fight for the lifts are insane, despite having stairs and escalators. Ppl push in before you can get off, and get in and the overload buzzer will ring and they won't get off so nobody moves. Inside, it's hot, it's stuffy, it's overcrowded and everyone is on level 1, 4, and 9. Most of the levels inside only have 1 single shop type: costume and makeup. Bring masks and earplugs or noise...
