The Friendship Statue is the informal name of the small statue you can see in the square set before the steps leading up to the Ruins of St. Paul. Here you see a young Chinese girl handing over a lotus flower, a symbol of purity, to a young Portuguese boy. The two figures are slightly intertwined by a tilted loop that seems to hold the figures in the same time and space. The image is to symbolise the friendship between China and Portugal. At times during the year, this statue is surrounded by planted flowers and other vegetation, especially during important holidays like Chinese New Year. At other times the statue is on its own. Regardless, it is an attractive inclusion to the area and makes for good photographs with the Ruins of St. Paul in the background.
