Jaco Tours Sportfishing — Attraction in Jacó

We had an excellent time fishing in Costa Rica with Jaco tours sportfishing! Jose Solis helped us coordinate our trips with Captain Carlos. Jose was so helpful picking us up from our hotel each morning to take us to the boat and handled all of our cash transactions with the captain. We spoke to a few people offering fishing trips from Playa Hermosa and found Jose to be the most trustworthy and the rate for the trips were about half the cost of booking through the marina in Los Sueños. Jose also had great recommendations for restaurants and sites to visit in Costa Rica! You can find Jose working at Hertz car rental in Jaco which made us feel more comfortable for conducting business rather than working with a random person on the beach. We booked two days for fishing and both were exciting! We fished on a 28' Mako which was comfortable with cushioned seats and good cover for shade. There was even a porta potty in the cabin for the ladies. On the half day we fished inshore targeting rooster fish and snapper. Captain Carlos had live bait ready in the bait well so no time wasted fishing for bait! The gear was well kept and the mates were skilled at rigging up multiple lines and the downrigger. We caught 5 roosters! On the full day we fished offshore targeting tuna, marlin and sailfish. It took about 45 minutes to get to the deep waters and once we were there we had 8 lines out constantly. Carlos had teasers on a few and multiple colored squid lures with natural bait on the others. The Dorado were dominating that day and we caught 10. Some of the biggest Dorado we've seen! The mate Josh cleaned and filleted some for us to take home too! Unfortunately we learned Jet Blue does not allow fish to be brought to the USA from Costa Rica so we donated the fish to Jimmy T's provisions and they made us a few Mahi sandwiches to take with us which were delicious. (Spirit airlines also do not allow fish to be brought to the USA, but most other airlines do as long as it is vacuum packed & frozen) Overall we had an excellent time fishing with Carlos and coordinating with Jose. We book our vacations with fishing in mind and have fished in Cabo, Playa del Carmen, Punta Mita, Sea of Cortez, Belize, Roatan, Florida, and many times at home in San Diego. If you are looking for fist class service look no further. Jose and his team has taken care of us from the time we landed. They picked us up from San Jose, and when we got in we told them that we were hungry due to the long flight. No problem. They took us to a awesome local restaurant where we had the typical dinner (Arroz Con Pollo). Then we were off to our condo.

Wednesday he picked us up bright and early for our fishing trip. We ran offshore to catch some dinner size Mahi-Mahi and once we got the lines out the Capt. made it look easy. We were in the Fish!! We caught Mahi, Tuna, Whaoo, and a Jack Cravel. One of the Whaoo was 5 ft / 60lbs. We lost a few Big Cubbara snapper due but it just gives us a reason to go fishing again the next time I’m in town. That night we took some of the fish to a local restaurant where they prepared the fish multiple ways for us to sample with fresh vegetables and wine.

Jose arranged a rental car for us on Friday then we set off to visit my wife’s family in San Isidro. I made my way back on Monday and stayed at the condo setup by Jose. In the morning they took me to the airport and dream was over. Back to reality as they say when the vacation is over.

We drove from Manuel Antonio to Jaco on the morning of our fishing tour and had all our luggage with us, but our Airbnb wasn’t ready yet. Jose went above and beyond by offering to store our bags at his place so we wouldn’t have to leave them in the car. That kind of thoughtfulness meant so much to us!

Captain Carlos and Jordi were also incredible. They worked really hard to help us catch fish and have a great time on the water. We ended up catching 12 tunas and even a sailfish—an unforgettable experience!
