We've been in Jaco for six days now. Most of those days we ate here for breakfast, and those experiences were great. This morning (FEB. 20) was different. We arrived and saw that most of the tables were empty, which was better than previously when we sat at the bar to eat (two of the previous mornings). The service on those days were on par with what you would expect with such a busy location on those days. But today, the service was non-existent. We sat in the same spot as the day before and I greeted the lady in Spanish. She quickly brought the menus and silverware, but then disappeared for the next 10-15 minutes. At that point I told my brother that we were going someplace else. Ironically by the time that I got across the street into the car I noticed her come out and get the menus and silverware. The same two young ladies from the day before were working so I couldn't see that as a reason for the delay (especially since most tables were empty).
To be honest I've been to this location multiple times in the past as I was temporarily stationed down here with the USCG, and never recall an issue like this. So when I saw the recent reviews, many of them claiming that they were unbelievably slow with the service I found it hard to believe. Well, after this morning I can see why others...
Read moreTruthfully, the food was good in my opinion. The prices were reasonable, the service was ok and the atmosphere… not the best. I tried not to think about what the conditions of the kitchen looked like. Anyway, everything was fine until we went to pay. My total was €10,239 colones which was $19.99 USD. I gave the woman a $20 USD to which she replied she needed an additional €5,000 colones which would’ve been an additional $10 USD ($9.77 to be exact). Confused, I asked her why because the currency exchange app I was using stated otherwise. Note: I have been using this particular exchange app the entire trip (as well as in other countries) and have never had problems with the accuracy of its exchanges. The lady replied that they “don’t use apps” and that the exchange rate they use in “private or smaller businesses” was different. I was quickly getting annoyed because the math was NOT adding up and she almost seemed annoyed when I told her I was no longer going to pay with cash and would pay with card instead. Needless to say, my card was charged $19.99 USD after the exchange (the same amount I had originally given her in cash) AND I of course decided not to tip after. This is the ONLY place I’ve encountered this during my time in Costa Rica. Shame it had to be the...
Read moreIf you are looking for fast service, ample breakfast options, unlimited coffee, easily accessible location and excellent service, come to sunrise. Its the pink place with the hot dog and hamburger benches out front. I got an English breakfast of eggs, toast and bacon for 3,500 colones or approximately $6 USD. My partner got a HUGE fruit plate, with the fresh and delicious fruit for a similar price. Not the most authentic Costa Rican restaurant as its owned by an individual from Boston, Massachusetts, USA, but the place to go if you're looking for a taste of home whilst abroad. Check it out, its right across the street from KFC and is...
