Museum of Croatian War of Independence will be located in one wing of Fort Imperial on Mount Srđ, which is the symbol of the defence of Dubrovnik. The first phase of the permanent museum project Dubrovnik in the Croatian War of Independence 1991 - 1995 has been completed. An exhibition of the same name has been put on at Fort Imperial with around 500 exhibits. The main themes include Dubrovnik in the Croatian War of Independence 1991 - 1995 and the history of Fort Imperial. The Croatian War of Independence in the Dubrovnik area was presented within the following themed units: The fall of the Dubrovnik Republic and history of Fort Imperial The Serbian-Montenegrin aggression in 1991 The days of victory - the liberation actions of the Croatian Army and the suffering of the people, civilian buildings and cultural monuments. The exhibits include: documents, art and documentary photographs, printed materials, weapons, mines and explosive devices, war maps, commands, parts of military equipment, objects from every-day life which belonged to the residents and defenders of Dubrovnik under the aggressors siege, authentic recordings and video material, reminiscences of the participants, the armed forces war flags, the original flag which waved on Srđ in 1991, mine fields maps, war log books, etc. A memorial plaque with the names of those who died defending Dubrovnik has been put up on Mount Srđ.

Read moreAs a person qualified in the study of museums, I thought this museum was well curated, well presented, and extremely poignant and interesting. The video and photographic content throughout was effective in emphasising the horror of the Homeland War and particularly the part that Dubrovnik played in it! For some, it may be a little text heavy, but there are plenty of artefacts to support it, and I found the text to be easy to understand and interesting. Some have commented on misspellings in translation, which are present, but considering this is a small museum ran and supported primarily by veterans and current members of the Croatian National Guard, I think one can forgive the occasional misplaced vowel. It certainly doesn't take away from it being an excellently put together space, with a very reasonably price point, and an amazing view...
Read moreA definite spot of interesting for people who are interested in the country history. I only learned about it before on TV when I was a teen boy. A very quick touch through history textbooks in classroom is nowhere compared to this fantastic museum. It tells how the war started and the suffering of innocent people between 1991-1995. The weapons used and items in the city collected from the war were displayed with detailed explanations. The entire structure of the fortress is also a good way to see the signs of war. Not sure the walls in and out were actually damaged by any bullets or rockets but I think they were. On the top level you however will see the today peaceful warm sunset of magnificent Dubrovnik.
