Mauna Expeditions — Attraction in Mariscal Sucre

I booked a Trek with this company and can really not recommend doing so. I usually don't waste time on commenting experiences, but this time it was so awful and dangerous that I feel I need to. So here goes :

TL;DR: Very bad communication. Dangerously bad choice of equipment in the high andes! Incompetent Guides. Lying and ignorant shop owner. Very nice views. 2/5 stars so people read it.

1. Communications: It started out nice. I wanted to do a multiday trek that started as soon as possible. The response was nice - Treks starting every day, prices better then most, so why not. I was promised treks starting every day, equipment included, so I opted for a trip starting next day. Over the next couple hours I received multiple messages saying the trip will happen, then that it won't, then again another trip was possible, then that it won't.... After more then 5 changes in both date and tour I was maximum confused. I the end it started to be obvious, that Daniel was NOT able to organize a tour next day and was just telling this to get more customers. The promise included equipment was gone as well and without me insisting on our agreement, I would have shown up with nothing.

2. Equipment: This is the main reason for this review! The tour was 90% higher then 4000m above sealevel, nights were obviously cold and conditions rough - just how I liked it in many high alpine tours I did on my own in Europe and the Andes as well. I was shocked to see the provided equipment. Sleeping bags for 15°C without a head cover, summer tent with 360° open sides and a thin (uncomfortable but sufficient) mattress. Absolute madness! People were using ALL there clothing at night, including rain jackets to not freeze. This on a 4 day trek is a horrible and dangerous idea, which I also reported to the Ecuadorian government.

3. Guides. I can make this short. If you take a GPS tracker and just follow the line stupidly off-road, you are doing the exact same thing as them. We almost never followed the established ways, going off road, sometimes fewer then 100 meters next to the trail for no reason. They lost the cooking gear in the second day. We never reached the destinations we aimed for, because the guides needed at least 1.5h a day fixing gear to the horses with strings and no rain cover.

4. Very nice views of the beautiful landscape!

We tried to complain and get a refund for this and Daniel was sorry for the experience and agreed. 2 days later he ignored our calls and messages and when a friend of ours visited his shop, he told him he would never...

I don't know where to start, as the planning of our tour (Condor Trek) as well as the actual tour, equipment, mules and guide were far below our expectations, especially considering the amount of money we spent for the tour (400$ pP.).

Tour preparation and promises: We were promised we could start our tour the next day. In the evening, it turned out we needed to wait another full day. Great for our personal plans. Don't trust anything they promise you.

Equipment: We were promised suitable equipment for the whole tour (tent, matresses, sleeping bags). The stuff was suited for a night on the beach at summer. The tents were extremely airy/cool, the sleeping bags suited for 15°C, and the isolating matresses thin as paper. We had about 5°C most nights, which means we were freezing every single night. Despite wearing all my high quality clothing (3 long trousers, 3 merino shirts, 3 jackets, rain clothing, 3 socks. It didn't help at all, as the sleeping bags were way to thin (see attached pictures).

Guide and Mules: To keep it short: The guide didn't seem to know the way most of the time. We lost hours packing the horses as the equipment fell every two hours. Our personal stuff didn't stay dry on the horses as well.

Summary: Don't be tempted by the price, you might pay with your life.

PS: After the tour we gave Daniel an honest opinion, and were promised a partly refund for our troubles. However, we were postponed and finally ignored and blocked on...

Zusammenfassung unserer Tour mit Mauna- Expeditions: Gefährlich, unterirdische Planung, Unzuverlässigkeit und insbesondere Unehrlichkeit seitens Daniel, dem Besitzer. Nachgeordnet, aber wichtig genug: Wenig Spaß. Daraus offensichtlich resultierend: Zu teuer.

Ich schreibe diese Bewertung aus der vollen Überzeugung, dass man die fehlenden Sicherheitsvorkehrungen und das schlechte Equipment abgesehen vom Geld im schlechtesten Fall auch mit seiner Gesundheit und seinem Leben bezahlen kann - Bitte bucht hier keine Tour und investiert etwas mehr, das werdet ihr euch danken und ich hätte mir gewünscht eine solche Bewertung davor gelesen zu haben.

Für Interessierte einige der Probleme etwas detaillierter:

Buchung & Planung: Wir buchten eine mehrtägige Tour (La Ruta del Condor - Condor Trek) mit Mauna-Expeditions. Schon bei der Kommunikation hakte es: Alles vermeintlich auch kurzfristig kein Problem, aber dafür änderte sich 1x/h der Plan und auch die Angaben zum Equipment und Essen, das wir brauchen würden oder auch nicht. Wir wollten am nächsten Tag los, das schien aber doch zu kurzfristig, sodass wir (durch die sich ständig wandelnde Planung und Equipment, was wir plötzlich mitnehmen sollten) zum anderen Trek einen Tag später genötigt wurden.

Ausrüstung: Wir waren alle sehr gut ausgerüstet und dies war nicht unsere erste hochalpine Tour. Uns wurde zunächst die komplette Camping-Ausrüstung im Shop versprochen und dies dann wieder revidiert. Wir insistierten, bekamen am Ende dann zwar Schlafsäcke, diese hätte man aber auch zu Hause lassen können. Geschlafen wurde in jeder Nacht über 4000 Metern und die Temperaturen waren entsprechend zwischen 0 und 5 Grad. Mit Sommerzelt und Sommer-Schlafsack (geeignet für 15°!!!!) kann man sich vorstellen, wie sehr wir nachts gefroren haben - obwohl wir ALL unsere Kleidung an hatten (als kleine Referenz: Sogar die Guides haben sehr gefroren und es bedauert nicht ihre eigene Ausrüstung mitgebracht zu haben). Die Schlafsäcke wurden auf dem Weg teils nass und hätte es auch nur ein bisschen mehr geregnet, wären wir mit Sicherheit nicht ohne Unterkühlung geblieben. Wer sich mit hochalpinen Touren auskennt wird verstehen, dass diese Art der Ausrüstung als großes Sicherheitsbedenken einzustufen ist. Die Verpflegung war gut gemeint, aber sicherlich nicht passend für eine Mehrtagestour (u.a. 3kg Zucker und 1 L Öl). Dies hätte man in 2 h selbst deutlich effizienter und besser einkaufen können und so auch Gewicht einsparen, da die Pferde ordentlich schwer bepackt waren.

Tour & Guides: Die Guides waren nett, jedoch weit entfernt von professionell. 80% der Zeit liefen wir durch hüfthohes Gras, anstatt auf dem teilwise nur 100m entfernten Weg (mit einem GPS-Tracker einfach nachvollziehbar). Wir erreichen an keinem Tag unser geplantes Tagesziel und mussten die Guides teilweise darauf aufmerksam machen, dass wir für die Nacht noch Wasser brauchten. Zeitweise kam es auch zu heftigem Streit zwischen dem Guide und dem Guide mit den Pferden. Unsere Verspätung war vor allem darauf zurückzuführen, dass das Gepäck extrem schlecht an den Pferden befestigt war und ca. 5x/d repositioniert werden musste. Am ersten Tag flogen dadurch mehrere Taschen von den Pferden (zum Glück nicht unsere) und am Folgetag verloren wir unbemerkt alle Kochtöpfe, sodass mehrere Mahlzeiten nicht zubereitet werden konnten.

Umgang mit unserer Kritik: Natürlich berichteten wir Daniel am Ende all unsere Punkte, welcher mit (im Nachhinein vorgeheucheltem) Verständnis reagierte. Er stimmte unserer Kritik vollumfänglich zu und sicherte uns eine Teilerstattung zu. Er konnte uns diese nicht in Bar auszahlen und bat (flehte fast schon) um 2 weitere Tage, um es auf anderem Wege zu überweisen (dies haben wir auch schriftlich von ihm zugesichert bekommen). Daniel meldete sich anschließend nie wieder - auf Kontaktaufnahme von Freunden aus Quito negierte er jegliche Avancen etwas zurückzuerstatten und behauptete, dass er das nie gesagt habe.

Fazit: Ich würde diese Tour nie wieder mit Mauna-Expeditions buchen. Lieber...
