Exceptional visit to Domaine Debray, a small-production winery right in the heart of Beaune, Burgundy. In a region with so much history it’s fascinating that as recently as 2006 Yvonnick Debray, who spent years in wine distribution bought the estate —along with vineyards from six of the 33 Burgundian Grand Cru appellations. Our guide for the tour was Hector, who has also been the lead winemaker for the last six years. He’s charming, knowledgeable, speaks perfect English, and made our group of 20 feel completely at home. He walked us through the whole winemaking process—from grape sorting to barreling to bottling—and shared how they focus on manual harvesting and integrated farming to honor the region’s traditions.
