King's Tower — Attraction in Libourne

The King's Tower is the only Romanesque tower that is still intact in the Gironde. From the floor of the lower terrace to the top, there is a height of 32 m. You can climb the 118 steps of the tower to the panoramic roof which offers impressive views of the city. The entrance to the tower costs only 2 euros. Its date of construction was between 1224 and 1237. Today the "Jurade" ( The Brotherhood of Wine, 1948) uses the tower. La Tour du Roy, situada en Saint-Émilion, es una fortaleza medieval que data del siglo XIII. Se cree que fue construida alrededor de 1237, posiblemente por orden de Enrique III Plantagenet, rey de Inglaterra y duque de Aquitania, cuando Saint-Émilion volvió a estar bajo control inglés.

Esta torre cuadrangular, de aproximadamente 14,5 metros de altura y 9,5 metros de ancho, es el único torreón románico aún intacto en la región de Gironda. Está situada sobre un macizo rocoso aislado y cuenta con tres niveles reforzados por contrafuertes planos en sus esquinas.

La torre ha desempeñado un papel significativo en la historia de Saint-Émilion. Actualmente, es utilizada por la Jurade, una cofradía vinícola encargada de promover los vinos de Saint-Émilion en todo el mundo. La Jurade celebra ceremonias en la cima de la torre para proclamar el Juicio del Vino Nuevo en junio y la Prohibición de la Vendimia en septiembre.

Los visitantes pueden ascender los 118 escalones de la torre para disfrutar de una vista panorámica impresionante de la ciudad y los viñedos circundantes. La entrada es económica y la subida es relativamente sencilla, lo que la convierte en una actividad recomendable para quienes deseen obtener una perspectiva única de Saint-Émilion.

La Tour du Roy está abierta al público durante todo el año, aunque de octubre a marzo es aconsejable contactar con la oficina de turismo con antelación, especialmente si se desea una visita guiada.

It’s definitely a noticeable landmark in this beautiful town. I didn’t go up the tower but took pictures around. If you’d only like to overlook Saint-Émilion, you could simply walk around the tower or went a bit up to the viewpoint, where you can find on Google Map. The town and the view were excellent. Bring your own bike or rent one to enjoy the countryside view. But be aware of the cars, they were at high speed most of the time and there were no bike lanes. I almost got...
