Incredible collection in a stunningly renovated water house, one of the best museums (and most intense) I've ever visited. Actual Vodou sculptures kept alive by traditional practitioners guard the place, as authentic as it gets outside of Africa!

A thorough audio-guide takes you through the African roots of Voodoo, connecting it smartly to American, Arabic and European traditions.

My only regret is having had too little time to fully immerse myself in the space (75'), I wish I'd had double that... I'll go back for sure.

The price is on the expensive side, but Château Vodou doesn't rely on public funding or subventions, and the experience is truly worth it. And besides the stunning exhibition, you actually get to visit a beautiful 19th century monument...

Two hours is a good time to get around the three floors, more if you want to dive deep. I'd recommend it for anyone interested in cultural traditions, colours, costumes, African art and history.

In one word:...

What I like about this museum, spread over four floors in an old water tower near the Strasbourg train station, is that it gives a rich insight into West African Voodoo. Fascinating & touching also to see the pieces that reflect the history of slavery.... "those who went away and never came back." Some pieces deal with twins, others with protective deities communicating between the world of the living and the dead, and even a sacred object to assist people born with physical deformities.

What I learned about Voodoo is that objects are used as part of a ritual ceremony to channel forces; in the hope of restoring the natural order of things, or putting the affected person back onto the right path.

There is an audio tour for non French speakers, but if you have a mobile, you can use Google Lens to translate the texts of the...

If you don't speak or read French, you are wasting your time. While they provide a audio translation device for your tour, it is not sufficient. at over 90 percent of the displays the device introduces the display and then tells you to read the description for more information. The description is only in French, no German, no English. With the placards being simple, one would think that by now it would have the description in all three languages. I would have given it 1 star, but I liked the building architecture.

Turns vodou is not exactly stabbing a doll with a needle. Interesting museum a lot of artefacts well maintained the touch with the lights on one of the floors gives some mystery. At the entrance you can take a recording device that guides you trough the place (I suggest bringing headphones if not you'll have to keep the device next to our ear) but it's good as you can choose a lot of languages, tho the signs in the museum are only in french. The place is a little strange but not far from the railway station - 10min
