We stappen binnen in een hal die er uitziet als de vertrekhal van een gemiddeld vliegveld: strak, wit, kaal, leeg, en een raampartij van zeker 1500 vierkante meter. Intrigerend, dat wel - hij is dan ook 104 meter lang, en maar liefst 22 meter hoog. Nieuw ook, want het museum is pas in 1998 opgeleverd. Het is een hal zonder kunstwerken, behalve dat ene helemaal aan het eind: een knalrode Alfa Romeo, in erbarmelijke staat. 'Automobile accidentée' - staat er als verklaring bij. Er is niets aan gedaan, en lijkt zo van de sloop gehaald. De naam Bertrand Lavier staat er ook bij vermeld, maar ik weet niet of dat de kunstenaar is, de chauffeur, of allebei! Geboren in 1949, en dus drie jaar jonger dan ik, maar ik heb er nog nooit zo'n zooitje van gemaakt. Maar ik ben dan ook natuurlijk geen kunstenaar….. Opnieuw vallen onze monden open als we een zaal instappen die gewijd is aan Gustav Doré met zijn grootste schilderij, 'Le Christ quittant le prétoire' (Christus verlaat de rechtszaal), van maar liefst ruim 6x9 meter - dan heb je zo'n hoge zaal ook wel nodig! Het museum bezit overigens nog 426 werken van hem, en geen enkel museum op de wereld kan dat nazeggen. Vervolgens zien we in de volgende twee uren een schat aan kunstwerken vanaf 1870 in hoge en ruime zalen. Achttienduizend werken heeft het museum in bezit, en is daarmee een van de grootste in zijn soort in Frankrijk. We zijn blij dat die niet allemaal te zien zijn. Wel zijn er veel beelden van Jean Arp te zien, een van mijn favoriete kunstenaars. Maar ook Pisarro is vertegenwoordigd, Picasso, van Doesburg, Monet, Kandinsky, Zadkine, Marlene Dumas, Niki de Saint Phalle - en vele anderen. Dan sta ik ineens voor het beroemdste werk van Auguste Rodin - Le Penseur - wát een kunstwerk! Mijn dag kan niet meer stuk.

The main reason why i wanted to visit the strasbourg museum of contemporary art is mainly because it is the home of some works of picasso, pissarro and monet. It was definitely nice seeing these but a little disappointed because everything is in french, no english. Even the brochures are all in french. Tourists and art enthuciasts would probably appreciate it more if there are english translation on some of the famous works,or even just the english name of each exhibit title. Not a lot of people visiting, so you may just purchase the ticket on site.

BIG space, unfortunately s lot of the newer modern art wss lost on me as there was NO Audio Guide, I dont know if it was a cost cutting measure as the coat room was also abandoned and there where NO Lockers to store bags? The entry took longer than expected, not because there was a queue, because the lady behind the counter was having a long, detailed, chat with her friend. Highlight was Rodin's "The Thinker" statue, there were some Picasso's but they were unsigned - if I had an audio commentary I might know why?

Great place for nice, artsy afternoon. We came to the museum on a very warm day (>35°C), as we wanted to take advantage of high ceilings and air-conditioning. But then the art inside was really nice and truly inspired us. We had a great afternoon. Strongly recommended👍
