The largest statue of the German state founder Otto von Bismarck near the harbour in Hamburg. A controversial personality Bismarck is regarded as the one who united the German states against France and finally accomplished to found the German Reich in 1871. Nevertheless he is being criticized for his racist remarks against Poles („you can shoot them like wild dogs“) and his policies against the working class movement and their major party SPD (the so-called „Sozialistengesetze“). The statue is still impressive and is a bit hidden behind the trees in the park where it stands. But the basement of the statute is a bit dirty and full of graffiti taggings. If that is okay for you then visit this place, because this is a true piece of German and European history.

This monument stands in tribute to Otto von Bismark, the Prussian statesman who engineered the unification of the desperate German states into the German Empire. This monument is a sculpture of truly monumental proportions at 35 metres high, it’s the world's largest Bismarck monument. The sculpture depicts Bismark standing upright, almost at attention. He is holding a sword with the point resting on the ground and both his hands are holding onto the handle of the sword. It’s a pity the monument is defaced graffiti.

Bismarck gets Banksy’d - St. Pauli style. A massive monument of imperial grandeur now covered in graffiti, questions, and critical commentary. What once stood proudly over the harbor now invites reflection more than reverence. The locals haven’t torn it down, but they’ve certainly spoken back. Remarkable to see how St. Pauli holds space for both history and protest. Worth a stop, even if just to witness the tension between past glory and present grit.
