Santorini Cable Car - Upper Station — Attraction in Municipality of Thira

The Santorini Cable Car is by far the best way to travel between the port and Fira. The ride is smooth, safe, and gives you incredible views of the caldera that you simply cannot experience in the same way on foot. As of August 2025, tickets are 10 euros per adult tourist, which is a very fair price considering the comfort and breathtaking scenery you get.

Unlike the donkey rides, which raise serious concerns about animal welfare and create unsafe conditions on the narrow paths, the cable car is quick, efficient, and cruelty-free. You avoid the crowds and the unpredictability of untrained riders, while enjoying a calm journey that lets you focus on the beauty of Santorini.

One thing to note: if there are multiple cruise ships in port, expect significant delays as many passengers will be lining up for the cable car at the same time.

The Santorini Cable Car was introduced in 1982 as a modern transportation solution to connect the town of Fira with the Old Port below. Its purpose was to provide a more efficient and comfortable way for visitors to travel between these two points as an alternative to the traditional donkey rides that were used to descend from Fira to the Old Port

My wife and I used the cable car to go the Old Santorini Harbour and take our tour to Nea Kameni and the Hot Springs, the 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝟲€ 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵, we must highlight that 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗲.

The queue to ride the cable car gondola was not as long and we waited for around 10 minutes, once we boarded the gondola, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝟯 𝘁𝗼 𝟰 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀, very fast and with a breathtaking panoramic view of the caldera and the Aegean Sea.

La funivia di Santorini offre un'opportunità unica di collegare il porto con la città alta dell'isola, regalando panorami mozzafiato lungo il tragitto. Tuttavia, per chi come me utilizza una sedia a rotelle manuale di larghezza superiore a 57 cm, l'esperienza presenta alcune sfide che è importante considerare.

Prima di tutto, apprezzo molto il fatto che ci sia un percorso accessibile per arrivare vicino all'ingresso della cabina. Questo è un aspetto positivo e dimostra un impegno verso l'inclusività. Il percorso è ben segnalato e permette di raggiungere l'area di imbarco senza dover affrontare barriere architettoniche significative ne la fila per fare il biglietto, ma lo fai direttamente all'ingresso. Per fortuna gli uomini della sicurezza mi hanno fatto strada per saltare tutta la fila di persone che era in attesa di fare il biglietto facendomi risparmiare forse ore di attesa.

Tuttavia, una volta arrivato all'ingresso della cabina, ho incontrato una difficoltà significativa. La porta della cabina è estremamente stretta. Nonostante le dimensioni ridotte della mia sedia a rotelle, sono riuscito a entrare solo al millimetro, con grande attenzione e qualche sforzo. Questo è un punto cruciale che potrebbe rappresentare un grosso problema per molte persone che utilizzano sedie a rotelle di dimensioni standard o leggermente più grandi.

Una volta dentro, la cabina è risultata sufficientemente spaziosa per stare comodi durante il tragitto, e la vista spettacolare ha compensato in parte lo stress iniziale. Tuttavia, la difficoltà di accesso non dovrebbe essere sottovalutata, specialmente in un luogo turistico dove l'accessibilità dovrebbe essere una priorità per garantire a tutti un'esperienza piacevole e senza ostacoli.

In conclusione, mentre la funivia di Santorini offre un servizio indispensabile e una vista impareggiabile, è essenziale che vengano apportati miglioramenti per garantire un accesso più agevole alle persone con disabilità. Allargare le porte delle cabine o fornire alternative di trasporto per chi utilizza sedie a rotelle più ampie potrebbe fare una grande differenza, rendendo questa esperienza accessibile a tutti.
