The Venetian Castle of Zakynthos is an absolute gem on this stunning Greek island. I had the pleasure of visiting recently, and it left me in awe. The first thing that strikes you is the fabulous ruins that stand proudly atop the hill. The castle walls and remnants of various structures have an air of history and mystery that's truly captivating. Walking through these ancient stones, you can't help but imagine the stories they hold within.
One of the most delightful aspects of this visit was the free entry for students. As a student myself, it was a welcomed surprise and made exploring the castle even more enjoyable. It's a thoughtful gesture that encourages young minds to connect with their heritage.
The old vibe of the Venetian Castle is enchanting. It's as if you're transported back in time. The narrow passages, weathered stones, and panoramic views of Zakynthos Town and the Ionian Sea create a unique atmosphere. You can almost feel the presence of the generations that once lived within these walls.
Whether you're a history enthusiast, a student looking for an educational experience, or simply someone who enjoys immersing themselves in the rich history of a place, the Venetian Castle of Zakynthos is a must-visit. It's a remarkable site that not only offers a glimpse into the past but also provides a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of...
Read moreIt's not that I disliked it but its not really worth the trek to get to it if you're walking. It's a nice walk but all uphill and with very little footpaths it can be dangerous. Yes there are beautiful views along the way but this can be said for many places on the island. Last entry is at 130pm you pay 4 euro to really just walk around a forest with very little ruins inside the walls. They have some areas signposted as ruins but they don't look like much to be honest, another ruin is being held up, rather unprofessionally, with timber boards!! The toilets were out of order and they didn't have any refreshments available on a very hot day. So bring water!
We read the reviews and still did it just too say we did something to be honest. If you like to go for a stroll and take in nice views and have a morning to kill than do it but don't go out of your way in my opinion.
There is a fab restaurant if you take the road to the right coming out of the castle, it's right on a cliff with fab views and the food was lovely, it was...
Read moreThe advantages of the position have been noticed since antiquity, and thus, it was already fortified in the Classical era, though it would be far from surprising if even older (Neolithic) layers are revealed after an excavation. But even the remains of the Byzantine period are barely discernable. The Venetians rebuilt the place so thoroughly that almost every sign of previous layers has been encased within the current walls. Most of the hill is naturally impregnable, with steep and high slopes that disallow any attack with siege engines or missile throwers of any kind and age before the 20th century. The NE side is somewhat more accessible and thus has been fortified with multiple layers. If none of the above is of interest, just get up there for the view and the photos. You are sure to be compensated for your time and...
