Nizamia Observatory is a space observatory which was started in the year 1907 by Nawab Zafar Yar Jung Bahadur, the minister of defence during the 6th Nizam, Mir Mahboob Ali Khan’s reign. On his return to the country from England, he brought along with him a small telescope, a Grubb refracting telescope with a 15-inch diameter and an eight-inch Cooke astrographic camera, with the idea of starting an observatory in Hyderabad. And that was how the foundation for the country’s second oldest observatory was laid. Nawab Jung expressed his interest in a letter to the Nizam, stating: “When this observatory building is constructed, it will be one of the greatest observatories in India. If your Highness approves, I will designate it the ‘Nizamia’ or ‘H.H. the Nizam’s Observatory.” The Nizam approved and so the foundation was set at the Nawab’s estate at Phisalbanda in Hyderabad. Later it was moved to Begumpet and under the purview of CESS - Center for Economic & Social Studies.

It was started some time in 1901 at Phisslbanda which later shifted sometime in 1914 to present place where there are two defunct towers are there . Since the observatory shifted to Rangapur in 1940s, these two towers with broken wooden are prohibited to public entry . Barbed wire fence protects the civil structures which are more than 100 years old . Osmania University’s centre of economic and social studies buildings exists now with some untouched vegetation which is also more than 100 years old

Someone arranged a heritage walk to this place and we were lucky to have the doors opened for us. Sitting right in the centre of the city, this observatory hosts Asia's largest telescope. There were three watch towers in total. I really hope the Government makes a move to renovate this and let people experience the heritage of the city beyond the usual places. I heard the towers are always locked and people are not allowed to visit unless permitted. So, please don't just walk in.

Scientific importance This is one of the two observation decks or towers, now in the state of complete ruins. You can see the wooden panels have fallen over time. The interior is locked and you can not enter it. We could not even find someone who may have the key. This Nizamia Observatory for years worked on an ambitious program of photographing and charting a large segment of the sky. This structure has rooms that are more like junkyard today. You can see a lot of peacocks in the jungle around and some nice wildflowers. When you stand there you get no signs of being in the middle of the bustling city with S P Road only stone’s throw away distance. This observatory is scientifically important astronomical objects can be seen through lasrge telescopes located in this observatories. It is visited by a large crowd who are interested in observing space. This Nizamia Obervatory place is very interacting place the student can enjoy here because this is also...
