Glodok-Pancoran is a chinatown located at the northern coastal part of Sunda Kelapa/Jayakarta/Batavia's old city center which now has become Jakarta as the 1st largest metropolis city as well as the capital city of Indonesia. This chinatown become the first area where the Chinese people, either they whom were called Chinese natives or Chinese-Indonesian born from parts all over Nusantara, started their settlement in Jakarta. The name of "Glodok" and "Pancoran" itself came after the water reservoir which collected water from Ciliwung River through a wooden pipe "pancoran" that the locals used to take its water here with carts and make the sound "glodok.glodok..glodok...". Glodok-Pancoran hold an important role as the center of trades that it then become a silent witness of the hostility between the Chinese as traders to the Dutch as governers that occured due to the unfair trade policies setting in Batavia as the capital city of Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC)/Dutch-East India Company back to the era of colonisation. Recently, this chinatown is not only considered as a central business district, but also become one of the main tourist attraction which presents the atmosphere of Chinese living, a complete perspective of Chinese buildings and settlement layout consists of housings, shops-markets, temples-shrines-pagodas, also authenticity of various Chinese culinaries. Read moreThose mall inside the Jakarta Chinatown are mostly empty. Activities can only be found in Jalan Kemanangan Jaya and Pasar Pagi Flyover. Jalan Kemanangan Jaya is not far from the Chinatown entrance and is a narrow lane with stalls on both side of the road and shop houses behind the stall. Is a wet market on the road. Normally this is what you expect in Chinatown. Is quite irritating when there is a crowd especially when you are stuck in the queue waiting for those Indonesian shopping on motorbike to finish theirs's purchase. After this narrow lane market. If you bother to walk further , you will see another roadside market with a wider road and cheaper price items. Most local bought from there. The Pasar Pagi Flyer is actually shop build under a flyover. Is more of a whole sales type of shops. You can find all sort of items there. This flyover can be seen if you walk on the...
