A beautiful abby in the middle of the city. We came here with a few friends, and although we didn't bring any ID we were allowed in with discounted fare. That was very friendly and nice of the people who worked there that day.

The structure was very beautiful, but it wasn't as big as we thought it too be. Also, we weren't or couldn't go up the tower. Next to that, it was very cool to see the old structure of the building though, walking through those corridors.

Would I come back a next time? No, most likely not. But would I recommend you to go and take a look yourself? For the 3 euros entrance fee, absolutely, and I believe it is something very cool to see and view, and enlarge your history knowledge through this!

It wasn't very busy, but then again, it was a regular weekday, and there were like 2 other couples...

One of the most complete monastic/religious ruins, it is well worth a visit. It is a friary, rather than an abbey.

Now ssomewhat 'squashed' in with the town, the development of Sligo has somewhat engulfed the surviving remains. The name is from the Irish Mainistir Shligigh and was built in 1253 by Maurice Fitzgerald, Baron of Offaly. The site initially is almost too much for the eyes, containing Gothic and Renaissance tomb sculptures, coffin lids, and screens as well as the best preserved cloister I have ever seen, the site also lays claim to have the only sculptured 15th century high altar to survive in any Irish monastic church.

The site was busier than many that one can visit, although it still retained a...

The detailed carvings, hauntingly beautiful arches, and tales of centuries past come alive with every step. The onsite information panels and guided tours offer insightful narratives, enriching the experience. An evocative blend of tranquility and history, Sligo Abbey is a must-visit for anyone exploring the...

Mid 13th century Dominican friary. Beautiful Gothic and Renaissance carvings and tomb sculpture. The only 15th century surviving high altar in any Irish monastic church.

A great old ruin to see, great info from the staff. If you plan to see a bunch of old castles and sites buy an OPW card it is cheap and then you get free entry and no line ups to many sites. I am touching the carved symbol of twisted rope, which is supposed to be good luck if you touch it and if you find it. From the outside of the Abbey, it doesn’t look like there’s much to see, but there’s lots of details inside especially all the carved columns many are different and have their own special meanings.
