Where do I begin? well, let’s start off with the ambience the vibe, the moment you look at the front you want to go in. I’ve been wanting to visit this restaurant for sometime but distractions and other things kept pulling me away. Finally, a friend invited me to meet her for lunch and Funké was the restaurant of choice I was thrilled because I’ve been wanting to visit this restaurant for nearly 2 years. Now I can’t believe I allowed myself to be distracted to any other place when this was available. I have a new favorite! And this is it. You walk in and you hear very cool music that just fits the surrounding and style and food culture. The design and overall aesthetic of this restaurant welcomes you with a very low-key cool vibe. I was pleasantly greeted the moment I entered by George with a big smile, welcoming me. I looked over and saw my friend already sitting there waiting for me. Even before I glance at the menu, I knew I wanted to have jerk chicken and so I ordered it. I’ve always wanted to taste it, and I can’t even begin to tell you how explosive and satisfying and amazing the flavors were in this incredible dish. I tucked in immediately and was trying to break down every single seasoning that I was tasting the tenderness of the chicken, the lovely flavored rub on the outside of the chicken and the hearty gorgeous rice that it came with. After only a few moments, we were very pleasantly surprised by a personal visit from the chef and owner herself! With a beautiful face and a gorgeous smile, she came out with her chefs coat on to make sure we were happy with everything and enjoying ourselves. I don’t know how we scored a visit from the chef herself, but I will tell you I felt very honored and told her myself how Amazing this food was. She is a true artist in every sense. My tummy is fat and happy after that gorgeous meal and as I’m sitting here in my car digesting that lovely meal, I enjoyed a slow walk through the town to my car stopped into a couple of shops. People asking me how I was doing and I said I am doing amazing. I just had the most fabulous meal ever and I told him exactly where to come. I told them I had the jerk chicken and I’m looking forward to trying other things on the menu, but there’s no question that The cuisine here is unmatched. As soon as I finish this review, I plan to head over to social media and find her page and follow it and share it there as well. You deserve a treat and I highly recommend you do not delay but prioritize your visit to this amazing restaurant, you will thank me. To the owner and chef, Funké I want to tell you thank you so much for embracing us with such amazing flavors and loving cooking. You are making the world a better place. I won’t be a stranger plan on that! As for my photos that I will share with you, I tucked into my plate so quickly I realized I forgot to take a pretty picture for everyone, but just let that be a compliment as to how the fragrances enticed me and I lost control. By the way, they also provide takeout options which I will definitely be taking advantage of, and I encourage you to...
Read moreI really did not want to post a review on a new place that's just finding their feet and be negative but I hope this finds the owner in helping her fix the problems before customers spread the word . Me and my partner travelled from Fermanagh for our anniversary here as I seen the story in the paper and connected with the idea of funke. I am a chef myself and really wanted to come here. The staff were so friendly and smiling. But their service needs alot of improvement for the business to succeed . We orded two different soups as starters ,two mains and two sides.( Bean soup, chicken pepper soup ,2x jerk chickens with jollof rice 1extra hot and one mild , planting chips as a side and suyo beef as a side). Understandle big order so things can go wrong but there were too many mistakes as to why I am lead to write this So before soups we got our plantine chips arrived first which were suppose to be with mains and nobody apologized just walked away. Our soups were then left on someone else's table by mistake for a few minutes before being lifted and brought to our table which is very off-putting as someone could have tasted them or even eaten some of it. Then our mains came down and it was a leg of jerk chicken . I'm not sure was it a different chef from what the photos I've seen on here but we could barely see the jerk on the chicken . I think the main itself was around 15 euro for a leg of chicken and plain rice with no veg that was dry .both came very mild even tho we had asked for one extra hot but maybe she forgot to inform the chef. Would not of minded if it was tasty but it wasn't great. Our suyo beef didn't arrive we waited 25 minutes after we had our mains finished in what we got the planting before the starters and our other side never came . We were that fed up we went to clear the bill and they told us it was on its way but we wanted to go. Asked for it takeaway got charged an extra fifty cent for the box. Very annoyed as our bill was 68.50 already for food we didn't eat. The jollof rice was so dry it said creamy rich tomato sauce on the menu but it felt like it didn't have any sauce in it which surprised me because they specialize in sauce and are award winning. Maybe we caught them on a bad night but incase this is what it is normally I don't want people to waste their money if it is regularly like this.the atmosphere around us was awful every other table were having problems with food arriving at all different times . Not once did any meber of staff say sorry for anything that had happened they seemed like really friendly guys just learning the environment but surely they had to of noticed at least one thing to be sorry for .I've never wrote a bad review in my life as I'm a chef myself and it not nice to push people away from a buissness. I love the idea of funke I just really hope the team sorts out some of these issues as I would like to see them do well from the story I seen...
Read moreI was there last night and was disappointed with the main course, not disappointed enough to leave a terrible review though and hopefully what I say will be taken into consideration.
The environment was brilliant and relaxed, all the staff were lovely but also seemed a little overwhelmed (Saturday evening in a relatively new restaurant so hopefully still finding their feet).
I was surprised to see no beer or wine on the menu, I think a restaurant will struggle to attract customers in Ireland with a non alcoholic drinks menu. There was no mention of byob anywhere but I'm certain I seen a bottle of wine on a table.
Now the most important part, the food. I had a moin moin as my starter and it was delicious, perfect actually. My partner had a tofu salad that was too vinegary, not great.
Our mains though is where we were really disappointed. I ordered the Jollof rice which was described as being cooked in a rich tomato sauce. It was just a plate of dry red rice with tiny pieces of tofu. When it arrived i was thinking maybe the sauce comes separately? But no, this was my main course, a bland and dry plate of rice. My partner went with infused rice and peas, again this was just a big plate of dry rice and was even more bland than mine. We both struggled to eat essentially a plate of dry bland rice, it was not a fun experience. Also both came with a side of cheap wholesale coleslaw which, while not great in itself, was a welcome bit of flavour.
I hope the menu improves and gives some more options. I've been to many Afro Caribbean restaurants around the world and the food is tasty and exciting, I think maybe look a bit more at improving the rice dishes, have actual sauces and bigger tofu portions. I wish you all nothing but the best and hope you won't take this personally, my starter was incredible and shows how good your...
