The Hunt Museum: A Hidden Gem in Limerick The Hunt Museum, housed within the stunning 18th-century Custom House building, is a true gem in Limerick's cultural landscape. This remarkable museum boasts a diverse collection of over 2,000 objects, ranging from ancient artifacts to contemporary art. As you step into the museum, you're immediately captivated by the grandeur of the building itself. The Palladian architecture and elegant interiors provide a fitting backdrop for the treasures within. The collection, amassed by John and Gertrude Hunt, is a testament to their passion for art and history. One of the highlights of the museum is its Egyptian collection, which includes mummies, sarcophagi, and intricate jewelry. You can also explore the fascinating world of ancient Greece and Rome, with a wide range of sculptures, pottery, and coins on display. For those interested in Irish history, the museum offers a comprehensive overview, from prehistoric times to the present day. You'll find a variety of artifacts, including Celtic jewelry, medieval manuscripts, and early Christian crosses. Art lovers will be delighted by the museum's collection of European and Irish art. Works by renowned artists such as Picasso, Renoir, and Gauguin are showcased alongside pieces by Irish masters like Jack B. Yeats and Paul Henry. The Hunt Museum is more than just a collection of objects; it's an immersive experience that takes you on a journey through time and culture. The knowledgeable staff are always on hand to provide insights and answer questions, making your visit even more enriching. The Hunt Museum is a hidden gem in Limerick, Ireland. It houses a world-class collection of art and antiquities, from the Neolithic to the 20th century. The collection was assembled by John and Gertrude Hunt, a couple who were passionate about collecting and sharing art.

The museum is housed in a beautiful Georgian building, the former Custom House. The building is full of architectural detail, including a grand staircase and a beautiful rotunda.

The collection is vast and varied, and there is something for everyone. Highlights include a collection of Egyptian mummies, a Picasso painting, and a Renoir sculpture. There is also a large collection of Irish art, including works by Jack B. Yeats and Louis le Brocquy.

The Hunt Museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in art and history. It is a fascinating place to learn about the different cultures and civilizations of the world.

Here are some specific things I would mention in my comment:

The diversity of the collection, from ancient Egypt to modern Ireland. The beauty of the Georgian building. The passion of John and Gertrude Hunt for collecting art. The educational value of the museum. The family-friendly atmosphere. I would also mention any current exhibitions or events that are happening at the museum.

I hope this helps!

A lovely collection of relics from 3000 BC to roughly 1800s. A family's collection accrued over a lifetime. The Hunts were not just another wealthy family collecting art... the were digging in the dirt of various sites around the world. Doesn't seem they found the Ark of the Covenant but I learned a great deal. The hosts are a wealth of information and eager to guide you or answer questions. I don't view it as a museum that would hold the interest of young children (in fact, I'd only give the museum itself 4 stars but I gotta tell you, I gave a 5th star for their efforts to be friendly to neurodiverse kids. A quiet space provided to escape over stimulation sensitivities impressed me(although I would have organized the internal space differently). Regardless,...

I visited this museum with my daughter, there is a lot to see here. There are many artefacts and works of art, including paintings by Paul Henry, sketches by Henry Moore, and a replica of James Joyce's death mask. Currently there is also an interesting exhibition about Ireland's links with Europe from the time of St Columbanus. This is to mark the 50th anniversary of Ireland joining the EU. A very nice lady explained the exhibition to me when we arrived. We had lunch in the café which was very pleasant, we sat looking out at the garden. There is also an exhibition of paintings in the café, and some sculptures to look at outside. We spent longer here than we originally expected. I would recommend a visit to this museum to anyone visiting Limerick.

A great and quite eclectic museum that is a real benefit to Limerick city and value to Ireland. The Collection is very much the result of two people's lifelong interest coupled with the means and opportunities to pursue those interests. Some minor aspects like paintwork and item cards could do with a refresh but this is a very enjoyable two hour visit in a great building and location. I particularly enjoyed the current contemporary Irish ceramics mini exhibition this time around and would like to see the museum pursue this area in future.
