If I could have scored no stars I would have for the experience I had in the Red Hen last night. Myself and my partner went out for a night out, we had a meal and a few drinks elsewhere before heading to the Red Hen for one drink before heading home. We arrived at the Red Hen and were greeted by the bouncer Leonard White, who was very welcoming and chatty. Once inside we headed straight for the bar where we met my partners cousin and some of his friends. My partner ordered one round of drinks for everyone (4/5 drinks) and a water for myself. The bar staff couldn’t have been more disgustingly behaved. The apparent bar manager accused my partner of being “off his face”, he remarked that he had been watching him all night and would no longer serve him because every time he came to the bar for a drink he was slurring his words etc. This was an out and out lie as we had only arrived in the bar 4-5 minutes previous. I tried to explain this to the barman in question but he was having none of it. He continuously wrongly accused my partner and continued to roar at me when I was trying to explain he must have the wrong person. Another bar man (blonde hair) decided to join in and start to also roar at me from behind the bar. I can’t put in to words how disgusted I am at my experience last night. A night that started so well in Limerick for my partner and I (both 26 and 27) to end so awfully because of the staff in the Red Hen. Coming from Limerick myself, I can safely say I will never step foot inside that pub again. As for tourists, I would highly recommend steering well clear of this place. This bar doesn’t provide the Irish experience many others in Limerick city...
Read moreLocated on O'Connell St in Limerick City Centre and across the street from Arthurs Quay, the Red Hen is a really trendy Bar / Restaurant with a fantastic relaxed atmosphere and attention to detail. We went here for lunch and were greeted by friendly and helpful staff straight away. The menu looked very nice but as it was our 1st visit were unsure of serving sizes etc. I had the Chicken Curry with half Rice / Fries and a nan bread which was so, so tasty and a large portion to boot. My wife had the Pulled Pork wrap and T42 which came in a nice big pot with plenty for both..fantastic food, really well presented and great value for 2 very generous mains for just a little over €23...We'll be back...
Read moreThe Red Hen is quirky with bags of character and generally the food is excellent. However on my most recent visit, I was very disappointed.
A group of us had arranged to have finger food and were being charged €5 per head for just the food. However what was presented to us was NOT good value. We each got approximately one chicken goujon each, roughly 4 cocktail sausages, a few chips and some dips. The chips were so peppery I initially thought I was having an acute allergic reaction. I began to cough violently and couldn't breathe. It was an unpleasant experience.
It was a pity because everything else...
