Would I recommend Kilkenny City Hostel AKA Kilkenny City Boutique Hostel to others? This is a tough call.||||Cons:||||- Shower (shared) has no temperature control. It is a button that you push to receive 15 seconds' worth of lukewarm water. That was obnoxious.||||- There were also no shelves in the shower for you to put your shampoo/soap/etc - everything had to go on the floor for you to trip over||||- There was no temperature control/thermostat in the rooms, and the temperature was pretty cold||||- The website's front page VERY DISTINCTLY says "on-site laundry", and that is NOT true. There is no laundry whatsoever on the premises, and the laundromatte closes early.||||- Lower bunkbeds do not allow any room for the person to sit up.||||- It's a hostel, so no frills - like, no Irish breakfast, no toiletries, you have to rent the towel, parking not included, etc.||||- Parking is like, a 4 minute walk away||||- Sign on the door says check-in from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. but no one was on-site for 30 minutes when I tried to check in within these times (I had to wait in the burger restaurant next door). No phone number was provided in case no one was present.||||- Not handicapped-friendly? I didn't see an elevator and there are around 15 steps up from the street to the hostel||||- The hostel front doesn't have any obvious signage - I drove up and down the street 3 times looking for it, missing it each time||||||Pros:||||- Good location - main avenue of Kilkenny||||- Decent price (I paid 50 Euros for one night)||||- Bathroom had soap for handwashing (not all hostels do!!)||||- Very clean||||- Blanket was nice and warm and cozy||||- The front desk staff went out of her way to be helpful when she saw the dismay at my face over finding out that there was indeed no laundry on-site (and the laundromatte was closed)||||- Wireless was good for my needs (didn't use it for videos)||||||Some of the problems I mentioned are easily fixable - fix the website, install a little shelf in the shower, fix the signage out front ... But with the cold temperature in the room and the shower I can't honestly say I had a comfortable stay. As-is, I probably wouldn't stay again and would try my luck elsewhere if I returned...
Read moreMy family of 3 recently spent two nights at this hostel, booked through our small group tour. Fiona, the young lady at the front desk, is very welcoming and helpful. We stayed in a quad room en suite. The room was clean and even had a comfortable lounge type chair to sit in and look out the window towards the church.|The bedding was very nice and comfortable. Each bunk had it's own reading light, electrical outlet, and cell phone holder - a very nice amenity!|There was a full length mirror, something not found in all of the hostels that we stayed at during our trip.|A hair dryer and iron were available to use.|The shower is a bit odd in that you push a button for water that you have no temperature control over. It takes several pushes of this button to complete a shower. The first night we all thought the water temperature was good. The second night it seemed a bit cooler, but still okay. This will definitely vary by person. There was a plastic shelf and hooks in the shower for toiletries and a shelf area over the toilet as well.|The common area is small but comfortable. My only difficulty was trying to get a dish or breakfast while other guests were cooking on the small counter space.|We actually just walked the short distance to the Dunness Store to get coffee, pastries and fruit.|We felt very safe at this hostel. There is very little signage on the street. It is a red door on the left of the Hungry Moose burger restaurant. There is a code to open the red door after hours. Then a code to open the room door.|All in all, a very good hostel experience...
Read moreTower and Castle Kilkenny City Located in the heart of Kilkenny City, and although on street parking is available around the area, it could be limited in busier times It's got a real cozy decor, with a very traditional / period vibe. The seating is comfortable and sturdy, and the tables a good size. I also like the fact that the kitchen is visible from the dining area. where you can see the kitchen staff in action. The service here is top notch. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and will have you seated with a menu in front of you in no time. While waiting to order a second coffee, one of the staff members was so busy walking around being busy, she failed to notice us trying to summon her, so we walked to the counter to order, but this is only one point in the midst of a lot of good ones. The food here is probably some of the best you will get anywhere. fantastic quality, cooked to perfection, and presented perfectly. What more can one say There is a great selection of items to choose from for breakfast/lunch. or lighter bites such as grab and go coffees /cakes /pastries etc Definitely great value for money for the quality and quantity you receive Worth noting that Tower and Castle opens early morning and closes after lunch so doesnt cater for...
