Bastion Saint Remy — Attraction in Cagliari

The Bastion of Saint Remy is a majestic and famous monument in Cagliari, the center of Sardinia. This powerful defensive fortification, positioned atop a hill above the city, provides breathtaking views of the bustling harbor and the dazzling Mediterranean Sea.

Construction of the bastion began in the late nineteenth century, between 1896 and 1902, on the ruins of previous defenses from the sixteenth century. The bastion, named for Sardinia's first Viceroy, Filippo Guzman, Count of Saint Remy, was designed as a public place and vantage point from which Cagliari residents might enjoy the surrounding countryside.

Its hilltop position provides panoramic views of Cagliari's city, port, and bay, as well as surrounding mountains. The bastion's construction is a perfect combination of Neoclassical and Art Nouveau styles, creating a really distinctive and attractive edifice.

Two enormous terraces, the Umberto I Terrace and the Santa Teresa Terrace, encourage tourists to meander, reflect, and photograph the stunning view. Grand stairs, worthy of admiration, go up to the bastion, culminating in a triumphal arch decorated with elaborate carvings.

The Bastione di Saint Remy in Cagliari is an absolute must-visit! This amazing structure offers spectacular views right in the heart of the city. I was captivated by the incredible sunsets each night, which were truly breathtaking.

The atmosphere is enhanced by pleasant live music often played by local musicians, adding to the charm of the experience. The area feels very safe, making it a comfortable place to visit at any time.

Nice views from the top, but goodness, this place is miss-managed by the local municipal authorities. It has been "under renovation" for years and years. From the front of the Bastione the main staircase is closed. The elevator to the North East is closed. Access is off to the West, though it's not particularly obvious. The bits that were open are looking tatty and unloved. A shocking waste of what should be a superb asset for the city. Once you've eventually got to the panoramic terrace at the top and enjoyed the views, it's well worth exploring Castello to the North.
