The church, documented starting from 1086, was a regular Augustinian rectory from 1132. The Dominican nuns of S. Agostino of via Romea held control of it from 1472 to 1808, when the monastery was suppressed. In 1819 the building was again opened for worship and became the seat of the confraternity of S. Barbara and the Nativity of Mary. The church remained officiating until the mid-20th century. Today, now deconsecrated, it houses the University's Plaster Cast Gallery of Ancient Art. In the lower part of the façade, the typical decorative elements of the Pisan Romanesque are recognisable, already introduced with the construction of the Cathedral : blind round arches, pilasters, lozenges and oculi, two-tone marble inlays, human and animal protomes that dominate symbolic capitals, attributable to the Biduino's workshop (late 12th century); the upper part, of controversial date, is made, however, with bricks and a Livorno bench.
