Piazza dei Cavalieri, also known as Knights' Square, is a historic square located in the heart of the city of Pisa, Italy. Steeped in history and architectural splendor, this square is a significant cultural and political hub of the city.

Originally known as Piazza delle Sette Vie (Square of the Seven Streets), it was redesigned in the 16th century by the renowned architect Giorgio Vasari. The square was transformed into an elegant Renaissance space, becoming the headquarters of the Knights of St. Stephen, a military order established to defend the city from seafaring threats.

At the center of Piazza dei Cavalieri stands the striking Palazzo della Carovana, the main building of the Knights of St. Stephen. Designed by Vasari, it showcases intricate architectural details, including an ornate facade adorned with sculptures and statues. Today, the palazzo houses the prestigious Scuola Normale Superiore, one of Italy's most esteemed universities.

Surrounding the square are other impressive buildings, such as the Church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri, also designed by Vasari. Its façade displays a harmonious blend of classical and Renaissance architectural elements, while the interior features beautiful frescoes and artwork.

The statue of Cosimo I de' Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, stands prominently in the square, paying homage to his influence and patronage of the Knights of St. Stephen.

Piazza dei Cavalieri is not only a remarkable architectural ensemble but also an important symbol of political power and history. It witnessed significant events and transformations throughout the centuries, reflecting the changing fortunes of the city.

Today, the square is a vibrant hub of activity, attracting both locals and tourists. The surrounding buildings house various institutions, cultural organizations, and student facilities, giving the square a lively and dynamic atmosphere.

Visiting Piazza dei Cavalieri allows travelers to immerse themselves in the rich history and architectural beauty of Pisa. Strolling through the square, admiring the grandeur of the buildings, and learning about its historical significance provides a deeper understanding of the city's heritage.

Piazza dei Cavalieri is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts, architecture lovers, and anyone seeking to experience the cultural essence of Pisa. It is a place where the past seamlessly blends with the present, offering a glimpse into the city's illustrious past and...

Just a few streets west of the main route from the station to the tower, many tourists miss this Piazza. Known as the Knights’ Square, this piazza has served life as a political center and has been home to a bunch of Knights (St Stephen’s). In the center of the piazza, there is a statue of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, sculpted by Francavilla.

Currently, it is the home of the Scuola Normale Superiore, commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte to be based on the model of the Ecole in Paris. The greatest Italian professors studied here, like Antonio Pacinotti, Carducci, Pascoli, Fermi and Rubbia. On the left, there is Palazzo dell’ Orologio, rebuilt on the foundations of two historic towers of the Della Gherardesca family. it is lined with splendidly decorated buildings, has for centuries been the political heart of Pisa and is the second most important square after The Square of Miracles. A visit to the Renaissance church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri will give you a real insight into the colorful maritime history of the city.

These days the students have taken over the main building (Palace of the Caravan) is part of the...

the knights' square is an architectural jewel. It was adapted and rebuilt by Giorgio Vasari at the command of Duke Cosimo I de' Medici who had decided to found the seafaring military order of Knights of St. Stephen in 1558 and provided them with headquarters. Vasari designed a symmetrical building. Palazzo della Carovana, whose entire facade is decorated with sgraffitti. Also in this square are the palazzo dell'Orologio and the Church of St. Ştefan, both designed by the same Georgio Vasari. The Palazzo dell'Orologio is an impressive objective as it appears as a result of Vasari's ingenious architectural project that had to combine in a single unitary structure two pre-existing constructions, namely, two towers: Torre delle Sette Vie and Torre della Fame (that is, Tower of Hunger, also called Torre or Palazzetto dei Gualandi)
