Honestly anyone who gives this a 5 star review is high out of their minds. “Hidden gem?” More like “Hidden joke.” Bruh there was a line of 80-100+ people lined up to take a photo of this during midday on Saturday. At first I thought “let’s wait it out,” but after realizing 20 minutes had passed with the line hardly moving I nearly lost my mind and promptly left. Watching people dilly-dally like infants trying to fill up their memory cards with 100 photos and hogging up the keyhole while a line of people stare at them in frustration is not my idea of a good use of time. The word is out and this is not a secret anymore, guys. Aaaaand unless you know how to properly work a camera and are equipped with a DSLR with zoom lens, you’re not going to get that instaworthy picture you see online. Sowwry. Just pull a photo off of Getty Images for your awesome travel blog and call it a day. You’ve got better things to do anyways like taking photos of your...

Fascinating, the need for people to ever so briefly see with their own eyes, and then attempt to capture in a photo to show others (who'll then line up to see it for THEMselves?!), what can enjoyed a million times better and more comfortably online. Because it looks exactly the same, and your precious day won't be spent in a looong queue for a few seconds peering through a keyhole. Just a head scratcher! I actually slightly enjoyed the hour plus wait inching forward in the sun because standing still was resting compared to all the walking I've been doing... And then, of course, there is that inevitable point where you think to yourself – I've put so much time into this already I have to see it through. Really, somebody should get a grant to study the phenomena of the keyhole line! Don't even think you'll get a properly exposed...

Do you need a magical place? The Knights of Malta Keyhole is a truly enchanting and mysterious place. As you approach this unassuming keyhole on the Aventine Hill, little do you know the extraordinary sight that awaits you. As you peer through the keyhole, a breathtaking view of the Vatican comes into focus. It's as if you've discovered a hidden portal into another world. The juxtaposition of the ancient keyhole and the grandeur of St. Peter's Basilica in the distance is awe-inspiring. The Knights of Malta Keyhole offers a unique and captivating perspective, blending history, intrigue, and beauty all in one. It's a testament to the wonders that can be found in unexpected places. A visit to this mystical keyhole is a must for anyone seeking a touch of magic and a glimpse into the...

The secret that isn’t so much a secret perhaps any more - but it doesn’t make it any less fascinating! 🗝The keyhole is part of the property owned by the Priory of the Knights of Malta, a Roman Catholic religious order of crusader knights that originated in Jerusalem in the 11th century. It is the oldest surviving chivalric order in the world and is a sovereign entity under international law. The estate also hosts the embassy of the Order of Malta to Italy. 🏰The fortified residence originally belonged to Alberic II, a nobleman who ruled Rome from 932 to 954, and later became a Benedictine monastery in the 10th century. With its strategic location on Aventine Hill and advantageous view over the Tiber River, it was a natural choice for the seat of the Knights Templars when they came to power in the Middle Ages. ⚔️When the order was defeated in the 14th century, the property was passed on to the Knights Hospitallers, the predecessors of the current order now referred to as the Knights of Malta. ⚓️The property lies in the piazza Cavalieri di Malta, designed by Giovan Battista Piranesi in 1765. According to Roman legend, Aventine Hill was imagined as a sacred ship that would eventually set sail for the heavens, so Piranesi incorporated many nautical elements and symbols into his designs. The ornamental door symbolized the entrance to the ship deck while the manicured gardens within were the ropes and rig of the ship. 🌳 The gardens can be viewed by appointment only. @travelbymitra —————————————- #rometravel #rometrip #rometravelers #virtuosotraveladvisor #secretrome
