We arrived to Rome on a Sunday after a long drive from Trieste. We were very hungry, and as this restaurant was open early (18:30) compared to others, we thought we would give it a try. It seemed to have overwhelming good reviews. We came in right at 18:30 when they opened and were given the table in the back-right corner of the restaurant by the window. That spot smelled a little like urine. My wife and mother were debating whether or not to stay and eat there, but as most other places didn't open until 19:30, we decided to stay. My wife and I ordered a pizza each. My mother ordered the grilled chicken steak. The pizzas were pretty good, but my mother's chicken was seared and completely raw (full on red) in the middle. She ate the portions on the outside working her way inward before realizing how raw it was. I told the young waiter the chicken was raw and he looked and saw that it was, seemingly shocked. I complimented them on the pizza and asked for the check without the chicken. He seemed confused and then took the chicken away. They were getting quite busy and he never came back. In the end, I went to the cashier and just paid for the check including the 12 EUR raw chicken. I've lived in Europe for 7 years and have visited Italy almost every year since moving here. I don't remember ever having an experience like this at a restaurant in Italy (or Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, etc). It's a super cheap place food wise, which wasn't what I really was looking for, but raw chicken is unacceptable. Hopefully this was a one-time mistake. I'll likely not visit again...

I secondi? Rispondo io: in nessuno). E a noi...

Il Grottino is a solid choice in Testaccio's pizza scene - it lives up to the hype, and the down-the-street queue of local and international customers. Line up next to the door and make yourself known to the waiter. There is no list, they'll assign you a table when one becomes available for your party size. Busiest time is around 9pm, so go early or be prepared to wait. Food is traditional Roman pizza, thin, crispy, and slightly charred. They offer full range of fritti, bruschetta, primi (pastas), secondi (meats), and dolci (desserts), with a wine list and beer on tap. Note fritti with * are frozen, not fresh but still ok. Had the fiori di zucca and supplì, both were great. Pizzas were the star, we had salsiccia e funghi (sausage and mushroom), and the house Grottino pizza with sausage, arugula, and a soft egg on top. Both were fantastic but probably could do with a bit more seasoning (salt pepper and peperoncini). Service was great, fast and unfussy, but with pizzas priced at 8-10 €, they need to turn the tables over fast too. We had a great...

This is a bakery in the front and a restaurant in the back. The bakery is outstanding but the restaurant mediocre at best. We first ate at the restaurant, we were tired of eating pasta and were happy to see meat dishes on the menu for about 10 euros each. Unfortunately it was not very good. For instance, I got a pork cutlet which was really just an open faced sausage on top of some salad leaves with cheese on top of the meat. My daughter's meat dish was the same. The meat was tasty enough but there just were not enough sides or variety. A dinner for 3 with meat dishes (10-10.5 euros each), water, a beer, coffee, and some sweets cost 50 euros. Now, the bakery out front is wonderful. They said all of their pastries are fresh and homemade. They have a fantastic variety and we looked forward to going there for dessert and coffee every night of our stay in Rome.

This is such a shame to have to review like this. The pizzas were amazing. However, the service was awful. The older Italian waiter had no time for us and accused me of ordering the wrong pizza for my partner when I had specifically showed him which one and he even repeated it back. The pizza my partner had should have had ham and prosciutto on it but had nothing. When he decided to stop accusing me, he literally went back to the kitchen and added 2 slices of prosciutto on top with no ham. I completely never expected him to understand me as a Brit but even used Google translate to help. He seemed to treat us pretty differently from the locals which was upsetting. Like I said, the pizza was amazing. Very reasonably priced too. The service however left a sour taste in our mouths.
