In 2019, we loved our experience at Ca'Macana in their private mask making studio. We had a family of three with two adults and one 10yo who loves art and creation. Our class was in a private room with two instructors. The instructors were patient with our mask making learning curve. Each of us got to select two mask shapes to paint and design. If I remember correctly, they had approximately 10 painting styles to select from. We each selected our two mask shapes and the painting style of our choice. Their education about the venetian masks was in depth and very educational! One main instructor assisted each of us of how to create a style that suits our liking. We felt comfortable with every task, some of us "me" had taken more time with my perfectionism, where my husband and child were several steps ahead :). The lead instructor was very patient with us 'me' finalizing our two mask per person project. We would totally do this again, but only when the pandemic is over and the temperature is cooler. We were there in July 2019, and it was hot, hot, hot! However, the studio did have light a/c cooling, compared with other shops that had none during the 100+ temps most of the day and into the evening.
Overall, what a memorable and spectacular experience!
Our masks are totally on full display in our home studio!
Thank you Ca' Macana for an...
Read moreWe did the shortest (about 1 hour) workshop as a family. We all had a ton of fun, including the kids. Before we booked I was skeptical, because some reviews complain that the staff didn’t give sufficient instruction or assistance. I didn’t find that to be the case. However: It’s a 1-hour workshop. I don’t think there’s time to learn anything deep (though they do give you a wonderful book about masks as a gift). The staff tell you the basics and answer your questions, but it’s not a private lesson, and you do spend time on your own. It’s great for kids and parents who want to share a fun experience with their kids. But an adult with a serious interest in the art of making a mask should probably follow a longer and more advanced course. On a different note: Their masks are gorgeous (I guess all reviews agree on that). Again, some reviews complain that the staff is not very kind/helpful to customers looking to buy a mask, but I didn’t have that experience. I would not call the staff super chatty, but they were certainly helpful (even helped me decide which mask worked...
Read moreThis is a wonderful store, and the owners are such lovely people. They also have an additional location in Cannaregio. I spent three days in Venice on my recent trip to Italy, and I knew I wanted a couple authentic Venetian carnival masks for myself and as a gift to family members.
These are the real deal, not the plastic knock-offs you find in the tourist trap souvenir stores. They made the masks for Stanley Kubrick's 'Eyes Wide Shut'. The fact they were entrusted by a legendary filmmaker to supply the masks for his film tells you that you're getting the finest quality.
They have a wide array of styles too, including unique masks designed by local artists, as well as the more recognized historical designs.
The shipping was fast and efficient, and the masks were packed with the utmost care, so have confidence that they will arrive safely if you choose to ship them vs. putting in luggage (which you absolutely should do!)
