On 22nd August 1849 the first ever air raid in modern history! (54 years before the first airplane flight?) It was Austria that defeated the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia in the 1st war of Italian independence. They took control over the region but had difficulties to capture Venice which was held by the revolutionary leader Daniele Manin as the 'Republic of San Marco'. The Austrian army created the idea to deploy air balloons with explosives into the city. About 200 Balloons each equipped with a 14 Kg Bomb attached were released on 22.8. The Balloons were unmanned and with this uncontrollable. Pending on wind speed, wind direction and the calculated release of a rope with the bomb it was a uncertain adventure. Some of the Balloons eventually reached the city but caused little damage. The already exhausted Republic however gave up resistance 2 days later with Manin negotiating a handover deal while he left the city for good on board of a French ship.
