Yamazaki Museum — Attraction in Kawagoe

This is my favourite museum in Kawagoe, for the atmosphere alone. Its inside a real kurazukuri merchant house, the big thick plaster walls make it a cool haven in the long Japanese summer. The 500円 fee may seem expensive, but you get served tea and sweets as part of the price. Excellent place to stop after walking around Koedo in the afternoon. There are three rooms; the first shows tools of traditional sweet making (the Yamazaki's were merchants of foodstuffs), the 2nd shows various things (when I was there it was a number of Ukiyo-e prints). 蔵造りの町並みに面する老舗和菓子屋「龜屋」本店の裏にある美術館。

龜屋を代々経営する山崎家の四代目が、美術品の公開のために、また工場移転で余った蔵を利用して拵えたもの。

それ程大きい美術館では無いが、その中でコレクションの中心は、橋本雅邦の小品の数々。

橋本の指導の下で育った画家に下村観山、横山大観、菱田春草、川合玉堂といった巨匠がずらりと並ぶ中、橋本雅邦の作品は、中々見る機会が無い。

なぜ橋本作品がここに？だか、橋本は川越藩の御用絵師であり、山崎家など地元有志が頒布を受けたという関係性。

売れない橋本作品を支援した、という訳ではなく、既に大家の名声得た橋本から作品を買わせて頂いた風で、大作は無いが、並べて小品を見れるのは貴重。

美術館としては小ぶりで、500円はちと高いが、鑑賞後は龜屋の最中も頂ける。川越の蔵の中も見れてと、外のそぞろ歩きでは得られない体験が出来るので、トータルお勧め度は非常に高い。
