Stumbled upon this beautiful little museum on our way to the surrounding temples, so glad we stopped by to take a peek. The fabled cat was there sleeping on a windowsill when we arrived and later brushed up against guests meowing in contentment. What a life.

The museum's curators really did an amazing job preserving his work and home. It really felt like going back in time to experience a different era through an artist's eyes and works. Really makes me wonder what I'm doing with my life and how I can be as cool as someone like Kawai Kanjiro. I'm an absolute neophyte when it comes to art, but there were many sculptures that evoked all sorts of emotions and thought, none of which I can really articulate in any meaningful or respectable way. I'll just say that you should go and...

This place is very easy to find and really should be visited more by non Japanese. Most foreign visitors seem to be artisans which figures given Kawai Kanjiro's ouvre. The house is quite large and comfortable which would seem to be indicative of his success. The receptionists are very welcoming to non Japanese visitors, and its a relaxed atmosphere which adds to the pleasure of a visit here. Not all of his art might readily appeal to all visitors. Its also worth visiting the kilns which are located on site and are also quite extensive. be careful upstairs as there are a couple of places where a foot put carelessly wrong could result in being back downstairs without using the stairs. Take it slowly and carefully as socked feet can slip on polished...

Love the place, I bet it’s every artists’ dream to have a house & atelier like this. The cat is also very lovely. However I was very worried that there is a lily flower on the second floor when the cat is just roaming around the house freely. Lilies are highly toxic to cats and can cause severe kidney damage or even death simply being in the same room. Please I beg you to search for non-toxic flowers and plants for cats and replace them. Tulips and Lilies are the worst for cats. The cat is super friendly, an exeptional host. Other than the flower, the place is so aesthetically pleasing and has rich history. The work of the artist is...

Wow. The most intimate and educational experience I had in Kyoto. I was really tired of going to all the temples just to check a box and this museum is very much the extreme opposite. Shoes are off, incense is lit, and your mind is present. It was amazing to be able to walk through such an old Japanese space who belonged to an amazing artist. Couldn’t recommend any more. I would’ve spent all day there if I could. The cat is adorable too. Very sweet, just lets you pet him. Go in the morning when they open. It’s very quiet then. I was there from 10-12 and by 12 it was busy.
