My boyfriend and I had one of the best experiences of our trip in Japan so far at Kyoto Maikoya (Gion branch) yesterday afternoon. We were taught the art of the tea ceremony with our graceful, friendly and knowledgable teacher, Nana. The sweets provided were fresh, delicious and relevant to the season. Watching Nana was almost meditative and she was incredible at explaining the history and intricacies behind the tea ceremony, all in fluent English. She was also kind enough to help us with taking photos and allow us to explore the rest of the new store (including the little samurai door!). Our party of six got there late and they still made time to get us into our kimoto and do the women’s hair. This was a very peaceful and relaxing experience that we all needed on our trip. We were able to enjoy her beautiful dance and ask questions through an interpreter. She performed the tea ceremony for us.
