Paper thin walls so you're at the mercy of your heavy footed neighbours. If they decide for whatever reason to take a video call at 3am then you're also a participant.
Futons were very thin, not very comfortable on the back.
I can put up with everything else, especially at that price point & location, but sleep is the one necessity I was unwilling to sacrifice during my time in Japan. In hindight I should've just paid a bit more to stay at somewhere else.
On a more positive note, the staff are very nice and friendly.
edit:
We visited 10 different ryokan/hotels during our trip to Japan; Peace House Sakura was the only one with terribly thin walls. Let me be clear, the issue is with this establishment alone.
The futons were already double layered from the extras in the closet. Despite the doubled futons, it was still thinner than the singular futon present at the other Kyoto ryokan that we stayed at. Unless I am mistaken altogether & that the "Japanese Style" you allude to, found in no other hotel/ryokan, is actually the close affinity to hard flooring.
Perhaps this establishment would get better reviews by owning up to the improvement opportunities, rather than responding to constructive criticism by insinuating that the issue lies with the guests.
Perhaps this establishment would do better by providing the means to a comfortable sleep by default, instead of only acting upon request (seriously, business owner, try sleeping on your establishment's futons some time, the bar is really low)
Definitely...
Read moreStayed here for 3 nights mid-April - the prices throughout Kyoto were still very high due to the cherry blossoms. This hotel was very reasonably priced and in a good location - close to lots of temples, a train station on the Keihan line, and of course Gion is a few minutes walk north.|The rooms however aren't that great. They're spacious enough for Japan - all rooms here seem to be tiny - and they fit two large futons alongside suitcases etc. When we first entered, there was a definite funny smell - I still don't know what it was, not really damp or dirty just very strange. There was mould around the window and on the curtains though I suspect this is just from people leaving the windows shut overnight (we shut ours the first night and woke up to a LOT of condensation on the window, window ledge and wall, so left it open the remaining 2 nights). |The rest of the place seemed clean enough, the shower, sinks and toilets on each floor were fine and the staff were friendly. Entrance hallway is cramped with other people's luggage they have left either before check in or after check out and I second another reviewer's comment about the shoes near the door - it did smell like feet, but when you make guests take their shoes off by the door, it can't really be helped. |Overall, an okay stay for a good price, but I probably wouldn't come back. It was a nice enough little hotel and reminded me a bit of a housing co-operative/hippy commune a friend of mine used to live in, which is probably the vibe the owners...
