Matsubara Street — Attraction in Kyoto

A tourist trap. But you can’t avoid this street, as it is the preferred access point to the famous Kiyomizu Dera temple monument.

The shops lining the street are all geared towards tourists. Very commercial.

The street gets very crowded. People jostle with each other in both directions.

This would have been much more enjoyable if a bunch of tour buses hadn’t just pulled up and dumped people off in a small street. It was pretty crowded and lots of people standing around like they were waiting for samples at the local Costco. Would hate to have seen what it’s like during high season! Some really cute shops and unique things to look at (handmade pottery and unique gifts) but be prepared...

I like it how they put those shops all together so Tourist can shop and dine in one place.

Tip: Finish Kyomizu dera before 10am and go here for Shopping and Lunch. That time it is not as crowded as it will be on...
