One of the most interesting placing I've been to in a long time. 3 very good reasons this place such and interest go to. Let's start with the shop itself. Straight out the the Showa era. It's like stepping back 30, 40, or even 50 years in time. Even the TV is an old tube type (i.e. not a flat screen). The decor dark wood paneling and has odd and old Showa memorabilia. I wouldn't be surprised if some of those trinkets a worth far more than they look. The 'master' i.e. the owner, is a very friendly guy. Talks a lots, but then that is a part of the attraction of these types of shops. He was very knowledgeable about local events and the current situation in the city. Very good when you are traveling and want to find that little secret spot that really makes a trip worth that little bit more pleasurable. The food. It was exactly what I expected. Flavorful, delicate, wholesome home made Japanese food. Delicious. What I didn't expect was the a. delivery method and b. the price. a. Today's selections are on top of the counter and you can choose any four. They were all excellent. To go with your dishes comes miso soup, rice and pickles. b. ¥900!!! outstanding price for value.
This shop is not about just one thing. It's a great overall experience....
Read moreI wanted to try obanzai while I was in Kyoto, and I think I picked the perfect place for it. The people behind the counter were super nice, and fantastic cooks.
Things to note, they don't have a menu, and the language barrier is there, but the way they run the place makes it fairly easy to get around that. The guy told us to pick four items from the plates of food they have on display. I wish I could've tried everything. It was all absolutely delicious, and I was stuffed by the end. By the way, I highly recommend any of the fish they have there even if you don't normally like fish (like myself).
I'm not 100% sure about the price, but I'm pretty sure it was something like ¥1000 per person. For that price, I'd eat there breakfast, lunch, and dinner if I...
Read moreThis place was a delightful surprise. We found it because it had high ratings, vegetables, and a close location, and the ratings were undoubtedly deserved.
We got the four dish menu. It comes with any 4 of the displayed dishes (with rice, tea, and miso soup). Some of our dishes included mackerel, lotus roots, eggplant, and egg omelette. Despite me speaking no Japanese other than “thank you,” the shop owners were very friendly. All 8 dishes we tried were delicious.
When we tried to pay, I thought I misunderstood the price, as there was no way the price was that low (we have been spending much more for meals that were not as good). But it was indeed as affordable as it was delicious. Thank you for the...
