Togetsukyo Bridge is a charming little bridge that perfectly captures the tranquil beauty of Matsushima. Its name, meaning “Moon Crossing Bridge,” feels poetic and fitting—the gentle arch and red railing create a picturesque view, especially with the pine-covered islands and calm bay in the background. Though small, the bridge offers a lovely spot for photos and a moment of quiet reflection. Walking across it feels like stepping into a painting, especially on a clear day when the light shimmers on the water. Togetsukyo Bridge may be simple, but it beautifully reflects the harmony between nature and tradition that...
Read moreSaw the red bridge in the not far distance on my way to the train station and decided to further investigate. It was late afternoon and a stroll around the island turned out to be a lovely way to end the day in Matsushima. Though not shown on the map, there's a trail that loops around the entire island -- just a worn footpath rough with rocks and roots, but nothing dangerous -- with a number of Shinto and Buddhist artifacts and structures scattered throughout. Oshima was once a renowned site for Shugendo ascetic training, attracting many monks. The Tomogae Bridge, serving as the entrance to this sacred ground, symbolized the boundary between the secular world and the spiritual realm. The name "Tomogae Bridge" evokes the image of a moon reflected on the water's surface. The moonlight over Matsushima Bay, as seen from Oshima, must have been particularly...
