Read moreFrom the nearest bus stop at Hakusechō, it’s still about a kilometer walk. So if you’re coming from Kasuga Taisha, it might be quicker to take the Negi-no-Michi path that runs through the shrine grounds.
This temple is one of those places that feels hard to enter at first—there’s no staff at the gate, and I didn’t initially walk up to check inside. The entire temple operates almost entirely on a self-service basis. Even admission tickets and goshuin (temple stamps) are purchased from vending machines—much like buying ramen tickets 😅. Once inside the main hall, the highlight is clearly the Buddhist statues. The arrangement of the Twelve Divine Generals encircling Yakushi Nyorai (the Medicine Buddha) is something I’ve only seen here.
The hall is air-conditioned, but the lighting is a bit dim. Photography is strictly prohibited inside. Just because no one is watching doesn’t mean you should break the rules—resist the temptation.
