Edward Sylvester Morse (June 18, 1838 – December 20, 1925) was an American zoologist, archaeologist, and orientalist. He is considered the "Father of Japanese archaeology." In 1877 (year 10 of the Meiji Era), while looking out of a window on a train between Yokohama and Tokyo, Morse discovered the 大森貝塚 Ōmori shell mound, the excavation of which opened the study in archaeology and anthropology in Japan and shed much light on the material culture of prehistoric Japan. I learned recently that there was a monument to his discovery on the train platform at the JR Omori Station on the Keihin Tohoku Line (just South of Shinagawa Station). While hardly a tourist Mecca, I visited on my last visit partly because it was on a train platform and partly because I am a huge fan of Morse's collection of Japanese artifacts housed in the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA. E.S. Commemorating the 100th anniversary of Morse's discovery & excavation of the Omori Shell Mound. American zoologist Dr. Morse 1877 (Meiji Era year 10) on the train from Yokohama to Shimbashi caught sight of the Omori shell mound from the window of the train. The discovery of a shell midden gave rise to the excavation of the site. As a result, Japanese archeology developed. This bronze statue of earthenware excavated from the shell mound has been enlarged approximately twice. December 1979
