A hidden gem located in the middle of Tokyo. Here you get to enjoy unique art pieces by important contemporary artists from Japan and around the world. Atmosphere is like a private gallery. The selections were excellent, well organized with different themes each floor, and the interactive installations were quite inspiring. Be sure to make a reservation before your visit, as you will need a QR code to enter the museum. A great way to spend the afternoon before you shop again around the busy Shibuya area. Overall, highly recommended.

I loved it!!! Even though the QR codes were annoying, you get used to it. I loved the variety of art, and I wished there was more! I’ve never been to an exhibit that actually scared me. But the one room that was cold and had the long hallway with digital noises and binary… I got so creeped out that I ran out of there! I know it’s not real but art has never triggered my fight or flight before. So I thought that was cool and a unique experience!

2024年6月1日に開館した現代美術の美術館。事業家・投資家で現代美術コレクターである植島勘九郎のコレクション「UESHIMA COLLECTION」を展示する。UESHIMA COLLECTIONは2024年6月現在で約680点あるそうです。建物は1988年に設立。1989年9月にブリティッシュ・スクール・イン・東京が2023年8月まで利用していた建物をリノベーションして美術館兼オフィスとして使用している。ちなみに、土地は植島勘九郎の母校である渋谷教育学園の敷地内にある。コレクションは現代作家中心で、日本人の作家から海外の作家まで、そしてベテランから中堅、若手まで、例えば草間彌生や杉本博司、ゲルハルト・リヒターから、岡崎乾二郞、村上隆、オラファー・エリアソン、池田亮司、トーマス・ロフ、名和晃平、工藤麻紀子などなど。地下1階地上6階で、7フロアあり、3階から上はオフィスとして使用できるようになっている。実際、平日は3階と4階はオフィスになっていて、そこにある美術品は土曜のみ公開となってました。そして6階はスタッフ専用で入場できません。入場には予約が必須。そして予約時にメールで送られてきたQRコードで入館する。受付は無人で、端末にQRコードを読み取らせるとドアが開く。Supremaの入退室管理システムを採用してます。QRコードを認識してもらうのに多少はコツがある。そして、館内の各展示室に入るときもQRコードが必要です。作品の写真撮影可。フリーWi-Fiもあります。

Some interesting artworks, but… Having to sign up, having to comb through THREE emails to find the QR code, having to pop your phone and display the code about 7-8 times to get to enter each gallery makes for a pretty poor user experience.

But having to spend 20+ seconds to get the door scanner to read your silly QR code is really frustrating.

My advice to Ueshima Museum, do away with this system, keep the doors open once visitors are in...
