As always, Eric South’s chain has some unusual rules that aren’t clearly explained upfront.
First of all, the food here is excellent. The atmosphere is great, and the Shibuya branch is in a convenient location. However, here are a couple of important things to know before you visit: Thali Set Menu Seating Rule: You can’t order the thali set menu if you’re sitting at a table. It’s only available at the counter. This is because in Japan, many people eat alone at the counter, and the restaurant offers different menu options for solo diners. Minimum Order Rule at Tables: If you sit at a table, the staff expects you to order at least ¥3,000 per person. This is an unspoken rule—they won’t say it directly, but if your total is under that amount, they may pressure you to order more, often suggesting set meals. When I visited with friends, they insisted we order the set, which I didn’t want, but since we ended up spending over ¥3,000 per person, they were fine.
If you’re a tourist or an Indian visiting Japan, this might feel frustrating or confusing. But keep in mind, Japanese restaurant culture is different. Customers here tend to spend more on alcohol and less on food, which is the opposite of Indian dining habits. These rules are designed around local dining behavior.
That said, the food is truly delicious. Their mango kulfi is a must-try! As long as you’re aware of these quirks in advance, you can enjoy your visit. Just go with the flow—arguing with staff usually doesn’t help, as Japanese service culture strictly follows rules, even when they may not...

There was no Naan, it was only Roti. But the roti bread was not greasy as I had expected and was very dry.
The regular curry recommended by the restaurant was indeed the most delicious one. Keema curry was also tasty.
Butter chicken was too sweet. Maybe too much milk? I don’t know… Vegetable curry is also oversweet without savory. Lamb curry smelled strongly like a zoo to me who likes lamb usually.
Indian coffee is mixed with milk and sugar together. I love black coffee with no sugar, so was disappointed that they couldn’t adjust it...
Read moreI observed other customers too, but the staff don't seem to be keeping an eye out for customers who are ready to order. We also didn't get our water until we asked for it after 10 minutes. The restaurant was busy but the waiters/waitresses lacked energy and urgency in my opinion. Food was good, but service goes a long way in terms of the overall experience.
The other thing I wanted to point out was that depending on whether you're sitting on the counter or on the table, you can/can't order certain things. I believe a really simple menu would make the business operate easier and more smooth. Less is more. Customers find it easier to decide when there are less options and...
