The Vytis Monument in Kaunas, located near the historic Kaunas Castle, is a prominent symbol of Lithuanian national pride and resilience. Unveiled in 2018, the sculpture, titled “Laisvės karys” (The Warrior of Freedom), was created by sculptor Arūnas Sakalauskas. It depicts the Vytis, a mounted knight, which is a key symbol in Lithuania’s national coat of arms. The statue represents courage, patriotism, and Lithuania’s centuries-old fight for freedom.

Set against the backdrop of the medieval castle and the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers, the monument is striking in its size and dynamic form. The knight and horse are depicted mid-gallop, radiating motion and determination. The monument is constructed from steel and bronze, with a height of about 7 meters (23 feet), giving it a commanding presence in the city’s landscape.

This location was chosen for its historical significance, as Kaunas Castle played a key role in Lithuania’s medieval defense. The monument’s unveiling marked the centenary of the restoration of Lithuania’s independence in 1918, reinforcing its role as a symbol of national unity and freedom. While it has been well-received by many, some debates around its cost and aesthetics arose during its construction. Nonetheless, the Vytis monument remains a popular cultural and historical landmark in Kaunas.

The monument is easy to visit, as there are plenty of parking spaces available around the city center, making it convenient for both locals and tourists to explore the area and view this impressive symbol of...

Great wiev of the "start" of Kaunas as a city.some parts of the castle has been rebuilt , and they have a cool museum with lots of historical info. Also they offer guided tours inside and outside the castle.even kids will like this I think. The best is to walk through the old town and enjoy a cooffee or icecream on your way up to the castle.(remember to...
