Opened in 1988, the huge public library is strategically located right on the outskirts of Merdeka Square next to KL Gallery. The library used to be a government printing office and is actually the main library of Pustaka KL with numerous branches across the KL region, namely TTDI and Bandar Tun Razak. The library received a huge makeover in 2017 that went on for 2 years (which requires temporary closure of the venue) with significant renovation for its interior, improved facilities and an even wider selection of books.
• The library design is a lovely piece of architecture by itself. The art deco-inspired styling is timelessly handsome. The renovation takes it to another level. The beautiful scenery of Merdeka Square in its vicinity is simply the cherry on top. • Huge selection of books and other reading materials (magazines, newspaper) with most available to borrow. • Excellent facilities. Toilets, surau, elevators, desktop computers, meeting rooms, WiFi access and printing service. The library is fully air-conditioned with full CCTV surveillance. • Free entrance. First-time visitors need to register at the main counter. • No bag and outside foods allowed. Need to pack your excess stuff in the secure cabinet lockers. • Very near to LRT Masjid Jamek metro station (less than 5 min walk) and nearby Pasar Seni metro hub station (around 10 min walk) • Open from 10 am to 6.45 pm everyday except Monday. During the weekend, the library operation...

Facilities - AC functioning well, Clean toilets (no tissue, please bring your own), great equipments, good wifi too! Overall a modern setting library as compared to National Library (the one located infront of IJN)
Occupancy - tables are occupied even during weekday. We managed to find a sofa place nearby. It is comfortable for me.
Parking - only available underground of Dataran Merdeka and you have to walk from the side of the field to the library. Parking rate expected to be roughly RM10-15 (Not sure the max fee per day)
Public transport - took the bas from Pertama Complex (near Sogo - it was a hassle getting the bus to stop for you, and the bus only stopped at certain area (they didnt stop infront of the bus stop apparently - local man saw us and told that we need to walk forward abit where the bus usually stop - bear in mind, still no signage or anything). Then, it was like 10mins journey in the bus and we stopped at Dataran Merdeka bus stop. We had to cross the road towards the field (which you will see the underground parking staircase) and walk next to the field and moving towards the library.
Registration- you dont have to register anything. Just walk in and grab the shopping bag, put all your belongings in the bag provided. Backpacks are prohibited in the room so please leave your backpacks in the locker. No key given for the locker, you just have to set your own locker...
Read moreA very nice library. So many books to choose from social sciences to general books (yet to explore more types of books) but has a lot of room for improvement.
The nearest car park is under dataran merdeka. I was there from 1145 am until 515 pm. I was charged rm 5.
Since our weather can be unpredictable, please bring an umbrella beforehand.
Good things about the library: Library Staff are very responsive, they answer our questions very well. They also make sure library is peaceful. One of the librarian scolded a group of hina persons for making noise. Security staff are also very proactive, they brief us on the transparent bag and locker. Very nice lighting, I dont feel sleepy/sakit mata there at all. The air con is pleasantly cold. I dont need to bring my sweater there. And im not sweating. Its just a nice kind of cold. Wifi is stable and fast Surau is clean Toilet is clean (both basement and first floor) There is a cafe at first floor, its basically self service and slightly expensive but hey, the price is a bit reasonable for me due to convenience.
What can be improved The basement toilet has a yellowish dim lighting and only one source of light, it can be dangerous for vision impaired and elderly people. It can be improved by having white light and more light sources like 3 tubelights in the toilet.
Overall, it is a nice place to study and do work. I will come again...
