This hotel has relatively good reviews on various platforms, but in reality, the experience was quite the opposite.
Before my trip, I heard about severe flooding in Kuala Lumpur. I emailed the hotel to inquire about the situation but received no response. I then called the hotel, and the operator who answered did not greet me or offer any proper service. They hung up right after answering my question. However, I at least found out that it was still possible to travel since the water had receded.
On the day of check-in, I understood that rooms would be ready by 3 PM, so I went out for lunch and a walk, as I arrived around noon. When I returned to the hotel at 3 PM, there were several guests waiting. When I inquired about my room, it was ready on time, but the staff lacked service-mindedness and good behavior, which led to complaints from other guests who were waiting.
The reception desk lacked a proper procedure. From the time I checked in to when I came to collect my room key, there were two staff members, but they attended to all the guests at the same time without any queue system. While I was talking to one receptionist, they would turn to speak to other guests as well, making everyone wait longer.
It seemed that the reception staff were not well-trained, as they had no good solutions or responses when problems arose. While I was receiving my keycard, another guest who had just received theirs came down to complain because they had booked a twin bed but were given a large bed instead, and both were men. The staff said nothing could be done because the twin rooms were sold out. The guest asked for a solution, and the receptionist who was attending to me stopped to deal with the complaint, which was inappropriate because another staff member was available. I had to wait for them to finish dealing with the other guest. According to etiquette, this is very improper; you should take care of the guest in front of you first before attending to the next one. Having one staff member handle all the guests at once means nothing gets done properly.
I tried to understand that this might be the culture of this country, but since I work in hospitality myself, I couldn't overlook these issues.
The moment the elevator doors opened, there was a strong odor in the corridor, and the carpet was quite dirty. I hurried to my room, and fortunately, there was no smell inside.
7-8. Is about the room
My room faced Chinatown, across from the metro. I could hear the train running constantly whenever it was operating. If the room had been directly facing the metro, I wouldn't have been able to sleep. Light sleepers would likely find it impossible to rest.
So why did I choose this place? The location is excellent—close to shopping areas and just a 2-minute walk from the train station. The reviews were not like this. The reviews were actually quite good, and I didn’t know it would be like this. I wouldn’t recommend anybody stay here, but if you're not concerned about mold, it might be okay for you. I’m so happy that I stayed only two nights. I took many pictures but can't post them here. I might post them on...
Read moreWhere do I even start with this horrible hotel. I try to give places the benefit of the doubt, but we couldn’t even last 5 hours in this hotel without checking out.
Upon check in, I noticed the floors in the hotel were extremely dirty. This also followed in the room. I kindly asked for the housekeeping to mop the floor again, in which they used a filthy mop head and made the issue worse.
I asked again and they brought the same dirty mop head, so I requested they bring a clean one. I ended up having to mop the floors myself due to the inadequacy of the staff. You can see in the photos yourself that the floors are dirty, soiled, and full of dust and dirt in the hotel room. I’m not sure when the last time this room was properly clean.
I also want to mention that the pillow cases had blood stains on them, which we had to have changed out. We tried to still make it work but unfortunately the issues persisted. Not only were their small ants all through the bathroom and getting into our toiletries, but the hotel does not have adequate items for customers.
This hotel claims to serve breakfast but when asked for cutlery or bowls, we were told to “go to KK to purchase cutlery”. We were told that we were not allowed to use the cutlery right in front of us because “it belongs to the caterer”. I have never heard of a hotel in my life that makes you pay for cutlery when they have it in house.
My final issue that led to us checking out was specifically the guest attendant by the name of Aini. She is the most disrespectful and vile hospitality worker I have ever met.
She raised her voice at us over a misunderstanding about using cutlery, which led to me just saying okay, we can check out. Upon check out trying to explain to her our issues during the small 5 hour window that we were there, she spoke over us, rolled her eyes, and told us to shut up and said she didn’t care if we called the manager or corporate. Originally, I was promised a refund upon check out, she then changed it to 7-14 business days and refused to send an email to confirm this until I pressed her about it.
Aini thinks it’s okay because she “pissed” as she said to treat customers with disrespect, despite her inadequate and unprofessional service. I am appalled at the lack of professionalism and in all the places I’ve travelled in the world, I have never dealt with such a filthy hotel, and such disrespectful service. Imagine having to pay for cutlery in a HOTEL.
Please run far and fast from this horrible hotel. They will try to hide negative reviews...
Read moreThere are lots of cheap and cheapish hotels in the Chinatown and Little India area of KL, some clean and comfy, and some grotty. But most of them (at least in my experience) are noisy. If it's not traffic noises, it's echoey hallways and thin walls between rooms. So it's quite hard to find a place that I'd willingly return to.
Enter Travelodge. I've stayed in 5 different hotels in this part of KL, and this is the first one I'd be happy to stay again. I found a good price online, and requested an upper floor. I got the top (10th floor), facing over Chinatown, which in my opinion are the best rooms (the other side has the better views, but would get a little train noise). It was fairly quiet during the day, and very quiet at night (except for a bit of white noise from the AC). Carpeted hallways keep down the internal noise.
The room felt surprisingly spacious due to good design. There was a large luggage storage area (easily big enough for 2 suitcases) with a clothes rack, and a drawer below with a hairdryer and extra pillows. Kettle, fridge, big safe, TV with some English channels, desk and chair if you need to work, fast wifi. The bed was very comfortable and plush, with decent linens. Everything was very clean.
FYI, the bathrooms are shower only (Agoda says there are bathtubs, but there aren't. I asked the receptionist about it, and she told me all the rooms are shower only).
The breakfast offered decent variety (rice, noodles, congee, and 2 stir fry dishes for those who want an Asian breakfast, eggs, ham and sausage, baked beans and roast root veg for the Western version, plus toast, pastries, cereal, yogurt, dried fruit, juice, etc.)
There's a laundry room on the first floor (buy tokens from reception, 10RM for a wash or a dry) but I didn't think it worked that well. I used the machine on the right, and it used to little water that it didn't so much wash my clothes as wet them then toss them about. They came out of the wash still smelling of sweat 😩
But laundry facilities aside, this is a terrific hotel.
