A long overdue meeting of primary schoolmates of La Salle Peel Road Primary School took place at the clubhouse of Royal Selangor Club in July 2022 as a result of Michael's homecoming from the UK for a visit and the generosity of Peter and Andre in hosting us. We are all 67 years old and some have not seen each other after our primary education in 1967 which was more half a century ago. The few who arrived early had some beers or soft drinks at the bar for a start while waiting for the rest to turn up. We had a simple dinner at the adjoining cafe comprising a giant plate of delicious Singapore style fried noodles, chicken wings, sausages, some greens with red and white wine and the ubiquitous brew while sharing our stories of years gone by with plenty of zeal and nostalgia at the same time. Time passed just too quickly and it was time to say goodbye. We bid Michael bon voyage who incidentally has French roots and he gifted each a very meaningful souvenir from the organization he works for. We shall meet again was our battle 'cry' with gusto and not 'tears'. Being a preacher and author he will remember each of our needs in prayers....

Disappointed Experience at Royal Selangor Club

I was invited to attend a company event at Royal Selangor Club and thought it would be a great opportunity to celebrate a birthday as well. Unfortunately, the experience was far from what I expected from a reputable establishment like this.

I had requested the waiters to help hide a birthday cake as a surprise — a simple gesture that most restaurants or clubs would usually accommodate without issue. To my surprise, the staff, who were mostly foreign workers, rejected the request without much explanation or effort. It felt dismissive and unwelcoming.

Later, when we needed help setting up the table and organizing takeaway items, the service was incredibly slow. Despite the urgency, the waiters took their own sweet time, and when I asked for a knife after the cake was blown, they handed it to me five minutes too late — completely missing the moment.

On top of that, the food was subpar and did not meet expectations, especially for a place that brands itself as a prestigious club.

Overall, I left disappointed. Poor service, average food, and lack of hospitality — I will not...

The Royal Selangor Club, established in 1884, is one of Malaysia’s oldest and most prestigious social clubs. Located adjacent to Merdeka Square in Kuala Lumpur, it was originally founded as a meeting place for British colonial officials. The club is known for its distinctive Tudor-style architecture and long-standing traditions. Over the decades, it has hosted various cultural, sporting, and social events, contributing to Malaysia’s colonial and post-independence heritage. Members of the Royal Selangor Club enjoy exclusive facilities, including dining, sports, and recreational amenities. Despite modernization, it retains an atmosphere of old-world charm and continues to be a symbol of historical legacy and elite society in Malaysia’s capital.

If one is craving for an authentic banana leaf rice instead of chainstore ones, one may find one at a corner of RSC. This is probably one of best in town as the stall has been passed down from the current owner from her father. It is still served with adequate sized proper leaf with wide range of authentic dishes, and I especially like the dried pickled chili. Good ambience and perfect with creamy teh-tarik to go with! Highly recommended
