Let's be honest, having a 1-star review would not affect its reputation. Although this may be a waste of time, I felt compelled to write this lengthy review. Anyway, my review comes with no ill intent and if you find this review disturbing, stop reading at any point. During my Dec trip, I was taken back by the state of the Y5 rooms in Tower 3, which apparently is a newer tower. as cleanliness are TERRIBLE! And to top it off, I have to vie for the room like a broker on steroids watching the stock market! 1) The lobby smelled of vehicle fumes & cigarette smoke. 2) Disregard of NO SMOKING sign, Part 1 – Smoking in the lobby is a common sighting, males and females alike. I chanced upon a Polis officer, took the opportunity to ask on the NO SMOKING policy & actions are taken. Unsurprisingly, he replied that these people have issues or being sot (crazy) while pointing to his head and walked off. No wonder no one is bothered with the NO SMOKING policy. 3) Floor was slightly wet & grimy on the feet. 4) Dust beneath the beds have been there since God knows when as I chanced upon the cakes of dust when picking up a dropped item. 5) Genting Highlands, naturally doesn’t require air-conditioning, but that doesn’t mean the fan switch needs to come with 2 options; OFF or on at FULL SPEED! Luckily, the fan wasn’t caked with dust, for the moment I switched on the fan & fearing allergies, I was treated to a spectacular show of “Flying Dust Parade”, hence forced to have the fan off throughout my stay. 6) Curtains have thick dust that is visible without even squinting to spot them. 7) Out of my own comfort, I cleaned frequent touch points but debris within the clothes rack proved more stubborn than a donkey. 8) Converse water notice – I am definitely up for environment friendly initiatives but the auto-off power points (3-pin plug & USB plug) takes “green” to the next level as possibly through frequent use, the power points have become loosen & a 3-pin plug or USB plug will auto dislodge from the socket. 9) Skirtings are coated with think dust. 10) Walls coated with a thin layer of mildew. 11) Feature wall doesn’t help with mildew & dirty spots that are patched all over. 12) Windows are equally dirty with its own array of dirt and “what have you not” competing to outshine the dirt within the room. 13) Bedsheets & pillowcases are equally yellowed, spotted with stains, where I have pulled out hair before tucking myself into bed. 14) Towels are less than desirable & shared the same traits as bedsheets; yellowed, stained & have hair concealed within the (towel) folds. 15) Hairdryer is another environmentalist & has an auto-off function, which stopped when using for less than 1 minute! 16) Blatant disregard of NO SMOKING sign, Part 2 – Smelled throughout my stay & spotted an extinguished cigarette butt on the eleventh-floor lift lobby. Needless to say, the butt was there from last night till next mid-morning, which makes one wonder what is the purpose of the CCTV, smoke detector system & housekeeping for. 17) Blatant disregard of NO SMOKING sign, Part 3 & an arguing PRC couple – I understand that when people are upset, they tend to be louder as displayed by the quarrelling couple with LOUD & strong Chinese accent. Shouting at the top of their lungs aside, but the (male) clown took a cigarette, happily smoked, continued shouting & threw the cigarette on the floor, all in full display of the public with zero farts given. Coincidentally, this couple quarreled on another day when I chanced upon them in the lobby. Needless to say, they don’t shy away from public appearances with their loud shouting which, inevitably made the public become their audience again. Despite its Guinness World Records of being the World’s Largest Hotel & its moniker of “Rising to Greater Heights”, has INDEFINITELY “raised” one’s expectations of the rooms, cleanliness & expectations in the opposite direction. I, for one, would be turned off in visiting Genting again, as if my visit alone would make any difference.

World's largest hotel with 7351 rooms. So, be patient. We checked in at a kiosk. An officer helped. It took 30 seconds to check in. We were 15 minutes early (2.45pm). So there was RM 5 charge for early check in. If you have plans to take breakfast, do buy coupons when checking in. Otherwise you have to go to the counter after taking a queue number. Manual check in counters are under-staffed (and thus 4*). As much as I was impressed by its autho check in etc, seeking any help from the counter gives frustration. To take a queue number, you need to queue. Counters are many but only 2 staff are at the counter. And they appear novice little children. I pity those who have to check in through the counter. Definitely few hours wait. If the management can add experienced counter staff, the rest is perfect. Ours is Tower 2. No WiFi. No problem. You can buy a SIM with unlimited data from downstairs shops RM 20 for 1 week unlimited data. No water bottle in the room. No problem. There are water dispensers at every floor. Bring your own toiletries. They do provide hand soap and shower gel. It is written, shower gel+ shampoo+ conditioner 3-in-1. If you are picky, bring your own. Clean towels are provided every day. They earnestly cleaned our room and changed bedsheets. Perfect. They provide limited sachets of coffee, sugar and creamer. Probably not enough to make a decent coffee. Bathroom and washroom are small, but clean and nice. Room has a TV but no Netflix. Only basic channels. No aircon in the room because Genting has 9° to 25°c temperature. Open the window a little bit and it is like natural aircon. Don't expect spectacular view. Ours is facing other rooms, and we are fine with that. At the lift lobby, you can get a magnificent view. That is if the sky is clear on your day. Don't blame the hotel for a foggy view. We are above the clouds, in a subtropical climate. Location is convenient. Just take escalators up after alighting from the coach. Indoor theme park is just an escalator up. Outdoor theme park, Casino and Winter Wonderland are a few minutes walk. If you are taking breakfast, you will need to go to the Genting Grand Hotel. Walking there is about 20 minutes but complicated. They provide a shuttle bus between the hotels. Minibus comes every 5 minutes and there is a queue system but many guests cut queue. It can be frustrating because the mini bus is really mini and the guests are many. There are many food shops near the tower 1 to 3. You will need to pay higher prices and accept lower quality. Still, we can accept this graciously because there are tens of thousands of guests, and the hotels + F&B are getting supply from the base to the mountain. How much more luxury can we demand while exploiting the workers. By the way, there are many Bangladeshi employees working hard. They speak good English, are willing to help, have a pleasant smile. A very gratifying gesture. Keep them coming. They cherish their jobs. Early check in is possible if there are rooms available. You can see the display board, regularly updated. Everything is transparent. No corruption. Most places are cashless here, so keep your credit card handy. Check out is done by just dropping your key into the assigned slot. Read fine prints when booking the room. This is a premium location. So expect to pay high prices. I saw many who did not have a room (yet?). Some touts approached us offering a room but we walked away. With so much expansion, there is still shortage of rooms during peak periods. Singaporeans and Malaysians want to come here to feel the Las Vegas. And it does give that feel. Thank you First World Hotel for making our Christmas special.

Living proof that bigger isn’t necessarily better. The hotel likes to advertise that it’s the largest in the world (by room number) with over 7000 rooms, and rightly so… it’s earned those bragging rights. But what you don’t get told (understandably!) are the problems that come with a hotel of this size. Upon arrival, check-in was an absolute mess. There are self-service check-in kiosks with staff around to help which is supposed to speed things up, but there aren’t enough kiosks for the number of guests so you can end up queuing for quite some time. When we checked in, the first of our two rooms went quite smoothly, albeit with a RM5 charge for checking in 15 minutes early. But when we tried to check in our second room, we just got an error saying “no rooms available” and asking us to seek assistance. After queuing for what seemed like an eternity for a different assistant (apparently the one manning the kiosk could do nothing), we were told that it’s just that the room hadn’t been cleaned yet. That was despite it being a good 15 minutes at least past the check-in time. Why couldn’t the largest hotel in the world just give us a different room that was clean? Or at the very least, tell us that was the problem at the kiosk rather than making us queue another 20 minutes for someone else who couldn’t actually help us? Why is it that if we’re 15 minutes early, we have to pay RM5, but if our room isn’t ready for an hour after the check-in time, we don’t get at least a RM5 discount? After getting something to eat, when we came back to the kiosks (and queued for a good while again) we managed to finally get our second room key. As for the rooms themselves, they’re fine, mostly. As other reviewers have said, the rooms are small, but I don’t find that a problem for a cheap hotel like this. What I did find bizarre though, is that we had to fit the bedsheets ourselves… the clean sheets and towels were all just left in a bag on our (unmade) bed. I’ve stayed in a good number of budget hotels in my time and I have never had to make the bed myself… not even in a youth hostel. Bizarre. I also had a tear in one of my pillowcases and the pillows themselves were awful, so neither me nor my wife were able to get a good night’s sleep. There was no working extraction in our bathroom so everything was still wet in the morning after having a shower the night before. Other than that, the room was okay. It should be noted that there is no air conditioning, though the ceiling fan was cool enough for us. There’s also no toothpaste or toothbrushes (there is shower gel/shampoo), so make sure to bring your own or head to the nearby Watson’s to buy some before it closes.

  1. The lobby smelled of vehicle fumes & cigarette smoke.

  2. Disregard of NO SMOKING sign, Part 1 – Smoking in the lobby is a common sighting, males and females alike.

  3. Floor was slightly wet & grimy on the feet.

  4. Dust beneath the beds have been there since God knows when as I chanced upon the cakes of dust when picking up a dropped item.

  5. Genting Highlands, naturally doesn’t require air-conditioning, but that doesn’t mean the fan switch needs to come with 2 options; OFF or on at FULL SPEED! Luckily, the fan wasn’t caked with dust, for the moment I switched on the fan & fearing allergies, I was treated to a spectacular show of “Flying Dust Parade”, hence forced to have the fan off throughout my stay.

  6. Curtains have thick dust that is visible without even squinting to spot them.

  7. Out of my own comfort, I cleaned frequent touch points but debris within the clothes rack proved more stubborn than a donkey.

  8. Converse water notice – I am definitely up for environment friendly initiatives but the auto-off power points (3-pin plug & USB plug) takes “green” to the next level as possibly through frequent use, the power points have become loosen & a 3-pin plug or USB plug will auto dislodge from the socket.

  9. Skirtings are coated with think dust.

  10. Walls coated with a thin layer of mildew.

  11. Feature wall doesn’t help with mildew & dirty spots that are patched all over.

  12. Windows are equally dirty with its own array of dirt and “what have you not” competing to outshine the dirt within the room.

  13. Bedsheets & pillowcases are equally yellowed, spotted with stains, where I have pulled out hair before tucking myself into bed.

  14. Towels are less than desirable & shared the same traits as bedsheets; yellowed, stained & have hair concealed within the (towel) folds.

  15. Hairdryer is another environmentalist & has an auto-off function, which stopped when using for less than 1 minute!

  16. Blatant disregard of NO SMOKING sign, Part 2 – Smelled throughout my stay & spotted an extinguished cigarette butt on the eleventh-floor lift lobby. Needless to say, the butt was there from last night till next mid-morning, which makes one wonder what is the purpose of the CCTV, smoke detector system & housekeeping for.

  17. Blatant disregard of NO SMOKING sign, Part 3 & an arguing PRC couple – I understand that when people are upset, they tend to be louder as displayed by the quarrelling couple with LOUD & strong Chinese accent.

I, for one, would be turned off in visiting Genting again, as if my visit alone would make...

Thank you First World Hotel for making our...
