The Tsunami Moment is a freestanding memorial to the victims of the devastating 2004 tsunami, located in Boduthakurufaanu Magu in southeast Malé. The tranquil location is perfect to reflect upon the events of the fateful day, and is frequented by history enthusiasts and kin of the victims. The beach nearby is a popular surfing spot too. The tsunami that struck the Indian Ocean on the 24th of December claimed the lives of 74 Maldivians, and the Tsunami Monument is a monument marvel that stands as a beacon of hope after tragedy. The 20 steel spheres encircling the monument symbolize the atolls of the country, while the rising pillars stand for the waves of the tsunami. The rods of the structure pay homage to the victims of the disaster and the names of the 74 victims are carved on the edifice.

The Tsunami Monument in the Maldives, officially known as the Tsunami Memorial Monument, stands as a somber yet significant reminder of the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami that struck on December 26, 2004. This natural disaster had a profound impact on the Maldives and several other coastal regions across Asia, resulting in a significant loss of life and widespread destruction.

Key information about the Tsunami Monument:

Location: The Tsunami Monument is situated in the capital city of Malé, specifically at Raalhugandu, a popular area along the coastline.

Design: The monument features a simple yet poignant design. It consists of a large, black, marble slab with the names of the Maldivian islands that were affected by the tsunami engraved on it. The slab is surrounded by a peaceful garden area, providing a tranquil space for reflection and remembrance.

Purpose: The monument serves as a memorial to honor the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and to raise awareness about the importance of disaster preparedness and resilience in a country as vulnerable to sea-level rise and natural disasters as the Maldives.

Anniversary Observance: Every year on December 26th, the Maldives, like many other affected countries, observes the anniversary of the tsunami with events, ceremonies, and visits to the Tsunami Monument to pay homage to those who lost their lives and to renew the commitment to disaster preparedness and response.

The Tsunami Monument stands as a symbol of resilience, unity, and remembrance in the Maldives, reminding both residents and visitors of the enduring impact of natural disasters and the importance of being prepared to mitigate...
