Som Tam Thai — Restaurant in Malé

First of all, unlike most Maldivian restaurants, this is an extremely small space. Just three tables. So, the atmosphere may seem slightly crammed for some people. The warm ambient light added a very cozy and homely feel to the space.

It's just two people managing the place, one guy at the front, and one Thai lady in the kitchen - and she's as good as they come. Both of them were extremely friendly.

The food was nothing short of excellent. I had the following:

Pandan Leaf Chicken 4.5/5 The chicken was marinated and covered in a spicy mixed herb rub and cooked to perfection. The pandan leaf unrolled easily and the chicken was soft and juicy. This dish is almost always overcooked and left tough. But this was far from it. Packs a lot of flavour. Highly recommend.

Chicken Fried Rice, Thai Style 5/5 Not to be confused with "Thai Fried Rice, Chicken" which is a stronger version of this according to the person who attended to us. The one I had was the lighter variant. But don't let that fool you, it was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The chicken was not overcooked and the portion size was great. Like all Thai food, it went exceptionally with a good curry.

Beef Red Curry 4.5/5 Hands down the best Thai style beef curry I've had in Malé. The flavours were so rich and fresh, and packed a spicy punch. It paired so well with both the plain rice and chicken fried rice. The portion was okay, lots of delicious vegetables in it. I wished there was more beef in it though. The chef would probably accommodate that if asked to.

Sadly, they didn't have the mango sticky rice dessert. It seems they've been having difficulty sourcing good mangoes locally these days. Hope this changes soon. I'm very much looking forward to trying some soon.

Overall, I'll give the experience and food a 5/5 and highly recommend the small cozy spot to anyone who wants to give authentic Thai cuisine a try. The two who run the place are both very involved with the customers. The Thai lady even came out and sat next to us for a chat, asked how the food was and gave recommendations on what to try next. She recommends the papaya salad, which is something I would definitely try on...

Mình rất ít khi đánh giá 3 sao nhưng lần này phải đánh giá. Hôm nay tôi ghé ăn ở quán, pad thai cá rất ngon nên tôi gọi thêm 1 phần tom yum cá, tom yum cá có vị của cá bị hư rất hôi, tôi hỏi chủ quán đó là cá gì thì không ai giải đáp cho tôi đó là cá gì cả, tôi khiếu nại cá có mùi bị hư thì chủ quán nói tôi đó là mùi bình thường. Còn nói bàn bên cạnh cũng ăn nhưng không ý kiến, trong khi bàn khách bên cạnh ăn tom yum hải sản. Tom yum quá chua, sau khi ăn cá với tom yum thì tôi đau bụng phải đi vệ sinh và uống thuốc. Tôi khuyên mọi người nên cân nhắc khi ăn cá ở quán, không phải ở Maldives thì mọi quán cá đều tươi. Còn nữa khi tôi hỏi tôm trong món tomyum là tôm tươi hay đông lạnh thì chủ quán cố tình nói vòng vo, đến khi tôi thật sự khó chịu thì họ mới nói nó là tôm cấp đông. Đến lúc tính tiền tôi đưa thẻ master card mà tôi đã dùng để thanh toán rất rất nhiều nhà hàng, siêu thị,… ở đây để thanh toán thì họ bắt tôi phải trả thêm 4% tiền phí. Tôi hỏi lí do thì họ khó chịu với tôi và không giải thích mà bắt buộc tôi phải trả tiền phí. Tôi nhất quyết không trả và ép hỏi lí do thì họ nói là ngân hàng của họ là ngân hàng địa phương khác với tất cả những ngân hàng còn lại trên đảo ???? Vì quá khó chịu nên sau đó tôi đã ghé tiệm tạp hoá gần đó mua 1 chai nước để xem lại tên ngân hàng của các nơi khác thì mới nhận ra là họ dùng dung ngân hàng 🙂 Rất may là tôi vừa mới đổi tiền mặt lúc chiều nên tôi không phải mất thêm tiền phí khi cà thẻ. Mọi người nên chỉ dùng tiền mặt tại quán, tôi có cảm giác mình bị lừa đảo. Tôi đã rất kỳ vọng với đồ ăn Thai vì mấy hôm nay tôi chỉ ăn những món Ấn Độ ở địa phương. Và tôi hoàn toàn thất vọng. Đặc biệt là thái độ lấp lửng của chủ quán 🥺 và chất lượng món ăn. Tôi gặp rất nhiều người tốt và cũng ăn nhiều quán và nhà hàng địa phương nhưng chỉ nhà hàng Thai này phục vụ không hề tốt và giá cả cũng đắt...

If we could give 6 stars, we would. The restaurant is super tiny (only 3 tables) but offers a good variety of food. The pad Thai with chicken was exceptional. It was definitely the best pad Thai we ever had (and we had plenty in Thailand) and one of the best dishes ever: full of flavours, balanced in taste and perfect amount. They can make it spicy or not. Also, prices are very reasonable. Moreover, the couple (a special mention goes to Mariam, the lovely and elegant lady who cooks this amazing food) that runs the restaurant is so welcoming and nice. Couldn't recommend this place...
